Description

l N. C. BURN/w.
Butter-Buckets or Packages.
NO. 133,628; Patented De.3,1872.
UNITED STATES NELSON G. BURNA'P, OF AR-GUSVILLE, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 33,628, dated December 3, 187% To all whom 'it lmay concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON C. BURNAP, of Argusville, in the county ot' Schoharie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter Buckets or Package, of which the following is a specification Thisy invention has for its object to construct a bucket or package for holding butter, lard, and such other substances upon a principle vthat will enable either or both ends of the bucketor package to be opened so as to permit of the material being introduced or removed from either end with ease and facility-a result that will be found most practical and useful when prints or rolls of butter containing specified quantities are arranged within the package for preservation and transportation. To this end my invention consists in forming such bucket or package of three or more sections in such a manner that there shall be present in such construction a central section or body and two end sections, the latter constituting covers or caps, the parts being arranged and united in such relation to each other as to be placed in posi tion with facility for forming a closed bucket or package, or detached from each other for the purpose of opening either or both ends of the central section. The central section is provided with rims at each end, having lugs or screw-threads to engage with grooves or threadson the interior of the rims of the covers or caps in such a manner that said covers or caps can be secured upon or removed from the central section or body in an easy manner.
Gaskets or other suitable packing can be arranged upon the shoulders, or up on the ends of the central section, so that when said covers are placed in position the said packing will be compressed on their seats, whereby will be formed a hermetically-sealed package.
In the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of the central section with the end covers or caps detached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my improved bucket or package with the covers or caps secured in place by lugs. Fig. 3 is a similar View, showing a modication of the covers or caps secured in.
place by screw-threads.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates the central section or main body of the bucket or package, which, in the pres-l ent instance, is of a cylindrical forni, open at both ends, and provided Vwith necks or rims B, in such a manner and of such shape as to form shoulders or seats c a for rubber gaskets or packing b b. The necks or rims of the said central section are provided with lugs or screw-threads c c, or other retaining devices, to engage with grooves or screw-threads d, or other fastening devices, upon the interior surface otl the rirn D of the covers or caps E, whereby said parts are adapted to each other and capable of being conlined in position for closing the ends ot' the central section. The several sections are intended to be made of any desired form, and ot' any material found most practical for the different purposes or uses for whichthe package may be employed. The gasket or packing b will be arranged upon the shoulder or seat a below the lugs or screwthreads, or may be an ranged directly upon the end of the neck or rim B, in either case will be subjected to the action ot' the cover or cap, and thus produce a tight joint and a hermetically-sealed package, which will retain butter and other such substance for a considerable length ot` time in its pure and sweet condition.
By making the bucket or package ot' a een tral section or body, and closing each end by a cover or cap, so that the several parts can be connected or disconnected at pleasure, an article is produced that can be opened at either or both ends, thus facilitating the introduction or removal of the contents without inconvenience or injury to its original shape; and, furthermore, I am enabled to produce a continuous iiush surface upon the inside or outside of the bucket or package, which not only adds to its beauty but admits of close packing for storage or transportation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A bucket or package for containing butter, &c., composed of a central section, A, open at each end, and constructed to be closed by covers or caps E, having rims D, said parts being secured together by the fastening de vices c d, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of November,y 1872.
