To all whom it may concern Be it known that I. J osnrn A. CHARBON- win, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Rails and Locks, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention pertains to beds, and it contemplates the provision of simple and effectual means whereby a bed rail may be quickly and easily secured to the bed-post and its appurtenances by a person without assistance.

The invention also contemplates means such as set forth through which a bed may be expeditiously and readily assembled and this in a strong and durable manner and as quickly and readily taken down for shipment or storage.

The invention further contemplates a bed rail that may be either used in connection with bed slats or flat steel springs in which no slats are employed, as the case may be.

lVith the foregoing in mind the invention in all its details will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:

The post 1 of the bed is of the ordinary well known construction and adjacent its lower end said post is provided with the por tion 2 that may be formed integral with the post when occasion demands.

In its forward end the portion 2 is provided with a chamber formed by the side walls 7 and 8. rear wall 9 and bottom wall 10. Secured to the bottom 10 by the screw 6 is the locking pin 5 of my device and as illustrated by Figs. 1 and 3 the said pin is diamond-shaped, but in the future practice of the device. the pin may be rounded or of any other shape without departure from the scope of my invention. Moreover the said pin may be formed integral with the bottom wall 10 of the chamber when desired.

My novel bed rail 3 is of L-shape form in cross-section and at its ends the rail is provided with an integral head 4: through which an opening 4: is provided that corresponds in shape and size with the pin 5 and which surrounds the pin 5 when the bed is assembled.

As clearly appears in Figs. 1 and 2, when it is desired to use the rail in connection with bed slats. the L-shaped portion of the rail is placed upwardly; however, when it is desired to employ the rail in connection with a fiat steel spring, the L-shaped portion is arranged downwardly so as to present a fiat surface at its upper sic e to receive the spring.

In the practical use of the device when it is desired to assemble a bed, it is simply necessary to drop the opening f over the pin 5 when due to the weight of the rail the head 4; will move downwardly in the chamber of the portion 2 until it is stopped by coming into contact with. the bottom wall 10 of said chamber.

It will be gathered from the foregoing that the device overcomes the many objections to the dove-tail construction of look at present in use, in view of the fact that a delicate person may assemble the bed when equipped with my novel lock with the expenditure of but a small amount of effort and time. Moreover vermin may be quickly and effectually removed from the chamber of the lock and when the bed is properly assembled the same will be retained in a strong and rigid manner.

The device as a whole is inexpensive to produce and contains no delicate parts such as are liable to get out of order after a short period of use and embodies a device that ma terially enhances rather than detracts from the finished appearance of a bed.
