Fruit-Jars.
No. 133,518. Patented Dec. 3,1872,
heraiaz' NELSON O. BURNAP,'OF ARGUSVILLE, YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,518, dated December 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NELsoN O. BURNAP, of Argusville, in the county of Schoha-rie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has for'its object to construct a fruit-jar upon a principle that will enable either end of the jar'to be opened, so as to permit of the fruit being introduced or removed from either end with ease and facility. My invention consists in forming a jar designed especially for fruit, vegetables, &c., of three or more sections, in such a manner that there shall be in such construction a central section and two end sections, the latter constituting covers or caps, the parts being arranged and connected in such respect to each other as to be easily placed in position for forming a closed jar, or detached for the purpose of opening either end of the said central section. Each of the rims of the central section is provided with lugs or screw-threads to engage with grooves or threads on the in- -terior of the rim of the caps in such a manner that said caps can be secured upon or removed from the central section in any easy manner.
In order that the jar can be hermetically sealed, suitable packing or gaskets are arranged upon the shoulders or upon the extreme ends of the central section, so that said packing can be compressed on their seats by the covers or caps for the purpose of forming a tight joint.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the central section with the end caps or covers detached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the improved fruit-jar with the caps secured in place by lugs, and Fig. 3 is a similar view with the caps secured by screwthreads.
The letter A designates the central section or main body of the jar, which, in the present instance, is of a cylindrical form, open at both ends, provided with necks or rims B B, in such a manner and of such shape as to form shoulders or seats a a for gaskets or packing b b. The necks or rims are provided with lugs or screw-threads c, or other confining devices, to engage with grooves or screw-threads d, or other fastening devices, upon the in terior surface of the rim D of the caps or covers E, for the purpose of receiving and retaining the caps or covers in position for closing the ends of the section. The several sections are intended to be made of any material found most practical for the different purposes or uses for which the jars may be emgoyed, such as metal, glass, porcelain, wood,
0. The gasket or packing b will be arranged upon the shoulder or seat at below the lugs or screw-threads on the rim B, and the same be subjected to the action of the rims D of the caps E, or the gasket 1) may be arranged upon the end of the neck or rim B, in either case producing a tight joint and a hermeticallysealed jar, which will retain fruit, &e., when placed therein in a pure and natural condition.
By making the jar of a central section and fitting to each end a cover or cap, so that the same can be attached or detached at pleasure, I am enabled to produce an article that can be opened at eitheror both ends, thus fa cilitating the removal of the contents without inconvenience or injury; and, furthermore, I am enabled to produce a continuous flush surface upon the inside and outside of-the jar from top to bottom, which not only adds to its beauty, but, at the same time, admits of close packing for transportation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
A fruit-jar composed of a central section, A, open at each end and constructed to be closed by caps E, said parts being secured together by fastening devices, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of.
November, 1872.
NELSON O. BURNAP.
