Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application filed March 10, 1919. Serial No. 281,796.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN L. HAMMITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbonite, in the county of Shoshone and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved collar button for use at the back of the neck of the wearer, to provide for a proper position of the collar, especially those of the fold type, and to form a fastening device that may be applied with facility, and which when once applied lies fiat against the neck band and collar, providing for facile manipulation of the neck tie or scarf, and eliminating pressure at the back of the neck.
The invention consists in a one piece fastener of metal or celluloid, fashioned with particular and novel'lines to furnish the desiredform and outline ofsuch a device for accomplishing its functions.
In the accompanying drawings one complete example of the physical embodiment of the invention is illustrated, constructed and arranged according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.
Figure l is a view in front elevation of the fastener or button.
Fig. 2 .is an edge view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a top edge view of the device.
Fig. 4: is a sectional view through a collar and neck band of a shirt, showing the application thereto of the device of the invention.
In the preferred form of the invention as illustrated in the drawings, the device is made of metal, celluloid, or other suitable material that possesses a degree of resiliency, and the body 1 illustrated as of triangular form or heart-shape is preferably cut out at 1 to lighten the Weight of the device, as
well as to add to the resiliency of the material, the point P of the body being adapted to pass through the button hole in the neck band, and the horizontal shoulders H, H, at the top of the body presenting a straight edge within the laundried neck band B to prevent upward movement of the device after once being positioned.
Above the body portion a neck 2 is fashioned, the material being offset to the rear, and of suflicient width to receive the outer portion of the neck band B and the inner ply of the collar G which is buttoned thereon in Fig. 4; Preferably the bend is rounded as at 2 so that the round bend will touch the collar, or rather the outer ply thereof and in the space above this bend and the top of the fold collar, the necktie may be retained.
The head 3 has side wings as 3 3 forming an elongated member disposed horizontally with rounded ends and curved to conform to the collar C when in use. The entire device is dished or curved to conform to the rounded collar and neck band. and the collar is buttoned over the head by slipping the button hole of the collar over one of the wings as the initial movement, and then the entire head is passed through the button hole and the collar adjusted with the head above the button hole and the collar securely fastened to the neck band of the shirt S.
What I claim is A collar fastening device comprising a triangular shaped body portion with a lower point and upper horizontal square edge, a neck projected above and centrally of the body and fashioned with an offset formed with a rounded bend to support a tie, a head above the neck also offset from the body and having lateral wings. and said device curved to conform to the collar and shirt band.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
MARVIN L. I-IAMMITT.
