Description
C. A. TOUSLEY.
invalid Bed-Bottoms.
N0. 133,502. Patented Nov.26
Improvement in Invalid-Bed Bottoms; and I UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
CHARLIE A. TOUSLEY, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID-BED BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,502, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE A. TOUSLEY, of Battle Oreek,in the county ofOalhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making apart .of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of asideview of my invention, showing arrangement of parts. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of my invention. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the frame of the same.
My invention has relation to invalid bedsteads; and the novelty consists in a mechanism to adjust the head to any desired inclination by means of toothed segments operated by a pinion-wheel and lever, as hereinafter described.
A A are the sectional frame-pieces, made in two parts, and hinged at the middle a bymeans of the hinges marked 1). B represents anelliptical spring attached to the upper side of the slats and passing directly over the joint, as shown in Fig. 3. G D are revolving shafts extending across the frame, having their bearings in the side pieces E E. To the projecting ends of the shafts G D, on each side of the rails. are secured toothed segments F F, as hereinafter mentioned. One of the projecting shafts, marked D, is made longer than the others, so as to receive the pinion-wheel H and lover I, by which the shafts and toothed segments are operated to lower and raise the upper part of the bedstead. J represents a reversible pawl pivoted to the lever I at c, on the inner side, as shown on the drawing in Fig. 1. K indicates a spring-pawl, which is secured to the upper side rail in such a position that it may engage with the teeth of the pinion-wheel H and hold the adjustable part of the bedstead in whatever position it may be placed.
To lower the adjustable part the pivoted pawl is reversed to the other side of the pinion. The spring-arm of this pawl operates in such a manner as to prevent the reverse action of the pinion above mentioned without disengagement from the teeththereof.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the hinged bed-bot tom with the shafts G D, gearing F F, spring B, and the operating devices, substantially as specified. Y
2. The gearingF F, in combination with the pinion H, reversible pawl J, spring-pawl K, and lever I, substantially as specified.
In testimony that 1 claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLIE. A. TOUSLEY.
