I, CHARLES B. SPENCER, of Hastings, in the county of Dakota and State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvents in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is aspecication:
My invention relates to the combination of a spoke-wheel with rotary cams and rod operating on the lever, so as to raise and lower the head part of a bed-bottom, which may be done by the person lying on the same without the help of an assistant, and to adj ust it to any position desired, as hereinafter described.
Description of the Accompanying Dm/wing.
Figure l is a plan view of the bed-bottom, showing the slats, springs, adjustable head part, rod, cams, spoke-wheel, and the bedstrips upon which the spiral springs rest. Fig.
` 2 is an outside view of one of the side rails,
showing the spoke-wheel by which the rod and cams are turned, for the purpose of raising and lowering the head part ofthe bed-bottom. Fig. 3 is an inside view of one of the side rails, showing the operation of the rotary cam upon the lever. Fig. 4 is an inside view of one of the side rails, showing the grooves in the side in which the slats run, and a sectional view of the slats; also the head part or section, which is adjustable, marked G. Fig. 5 is an outside View of the head part or section, showing the connection of the lever with the same, by which the head part is raised or lowered 5 also detail views of the rotary, grooved, serpentine cams, and the lever that operates thereon. Fig. 6
. shows another form of the slats, and with two grooves in the side rails for the end of each slat, with the tongues on the outside edge of the slat to prevent the clothes from being caught by the shoulder on the slat.
General Description.
A in Figure lis the frame of the bedbotto1n, embodying my invention. B represents the slats with tongues on the ends to t the grooves in the side rails. C in Figs. 3 and represents the grooves in the sides of the rails, in which the slats play up and down. D represents the the rotary rod F. I is the spoke-wheel, by
which the rotary rod F is turned, shown in Fig. 2. H in Figs. 3 and represents the rotary grooved serpentine cams, fitting and operating on the lever K. J represents the arm which connects the lever K with the head part G. L in Fig. l is a view of the tongue on the slats. C in Figs. 3 and 4. representsthe grooves in the side rails, in which the slats play up and down. Fig. 4. is a side view ot' the adjustable head part G, partly raised. K is the lever. J is the connection, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, attached to the outside of the head part G. The lever K, the connection J and the rotary cam H all work between the inside of the side rail, andthe outside of the rail of the head part G. Hrepresents the cam, scalloped or serpentine, to lit the lever K, so as to prevent it from slipping. H represents the grooves in the edge of the cam H, in which the lever K works and is keptin place, or the edge of the lever K may be grooved and the edge of the cani H rounded.
Claim.
I claim as my invention- In combination withthe side rails of a bedbcttom, the rod F bearing spoke-wheel I, the serpentine grooved cams H, the lever K, connecting-arm J, and adjustable head-frame G, all constructed and operated substantially as described.
