SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,599, dated November 22, 1887.

Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F.,OWEN and EDWARD L. OWEN, of Chicago, Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the following isa full,clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the class of upright folding beds; and the same consists of certain novel features in the construction, combination, and operation of the several parts, as will be hereinafter set forth.

Figure l is a sectional view of part of the device in the plane l, Fig. 3, showing the bed in position for use; Fig. 2, asimilar view showing the bed in the opposite or folded position; Fig. 3, a horizontal broken-away section in the plane 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows apart of the head-board and a sectional portion of the inclosing-case; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 illustrate details of construction.

In the drawings, A represents the inclosing case or cabinet; B B, the side rails; B', the head-board, and B2 the bed-bottom. The two levers C C are placed on each side of the bed between the bed-rails and the sides of the inclosing-case, as shown in Fig. 8. Theinner or bearing ends of the movement-levers are provided with the diagonal notch or recess a and the perforations a', as shown in Fig. 5.

a2 al are disk-plates rigidly secured to the inner sides of the inclosing-case and provided with the inwardly-projecting bearing-pins a3, which engage with the perforations a. at ai* are similar disk-plates (see Fig. 6) secured to the inner side of the bed rails, the pivot-pin a5, forming an integral part of the same, passing through said rails and engaging with the diagonal notch a in the movement levers C O. The opposite ends of the levers C C are turned at right angles and bolted to the ends of the transverse weight-bar D, on which are placed a number of weights, E, as shown in Fig. 3. These weights are of the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and are provided on the innerside With the recess b for the reception of the transverse bar D, the hook part b of the weights overlapping the edge of said bar in the manner illustrated in Fig. 7. By this arrangement it will be observed that the weights may be easily and conveniently removed or replaced with but little labor and trouble, and by using a number ofslnall weights instead of large ones the number may be added to or taken away from, so as to obtain the exact weight necessary to keep the bed nicely balanced in accordance with the weight of the bedding, thus securing an easy movement at all times in converting the bed from one position to the other. The rectangular plates d d are rigidly secured to the back side and ends of the headboard, and are provided with the rectangular notch d for the reception of the weight-bar D, (see Fig. 7,) the projecting corners d'2 of the plates d d embracing the edges of the weightbar and bearing against the same in raising or lowering the bed. By this construction and arrangement the balance-weights are not attached directly to the bed proper, so that the latter may be entirely removed from the case without disturbing the weights by simply moving the head end of the bed, so as to disengage the pin or pins a from the diagonal notch a in the levers C O. One end of the adjustable braces d3 da is pivoted to the inner side of the case,and may be turned upward to engage with the under side of the weight-bar (see Fig. l) to assist in supporting the same when the bed proper is entirely separated from the case. When not in use, the braces occupy the position shown in Fig. 2, the loose end resting on the stop-cleats d4, rigidly secured to the inner side of the inclosing-case.

The weight-bar and levers O O may be combined in a single piece, should it be an advantage to do so, instead of being in three parts, as shown.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, issl. In a folding bed, the combination, with the inclosing-case and the folding part or section, of the transverse weight-bar, the movement-levers provided with the diagonal notch a and the perforations a', the disk-plates a", having bearing-pins a3, which engage with said perforations, the disk-plates ci, provided IOO with pins a5, having abearing in said notch, the plates d d, secured to the head-board and provided with the rectangular notch d', and

the projecting corners d2, Which embrace the edges of the Weight-bar, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.

2. In a folding bed, the combination, Withthe inclosi'ng back case,of the movement-levers C C, the disk plate or plates a2, rigidly secured to the inner sides of`said case and provided With bearing-pins which engage With said levers, the rails B B, thedisk plate or. plates a4, rigidly secured to the inner side of said rails and having pivot-pins which engage with the ends of said levers, whereby the folding section of the bed may be readily converted fromone position to the other or conveniently detached from the back, and the weighted transverse bar D, connecting the back ends of said levers, substantially as set forth. v

3. In a folding bed, the combination, with the inclosing-case and the folding part or section, of thev weighted bar D, the braces d3, pivoted at one end 4to the inner side of said case, whereby the Weighted bar may be supported in place when the folding-bed section is removed, and the cleats d4, also secured to the inner side of said case and which provide a rest for said cleats when out of contact with the weighted bar D, substantially as set forth.
