To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID T. FLUNKET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid- Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appen.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in invalid beds and the object in view is to produce a simple and eflicient device of this nature so arranged that parts of the bed or the entire bed. itself may be tilted and held at different angles.

The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and ar rangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an invalid bed made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view, parts being in section. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. t is an end view.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bedstead proper having a head A and a foot A Said head has a vertically adjustable frame B, shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings, the legs of which slide against the opposite edges of the legs of the head A and an adjusting screw B is mounted in apertures in a threaded plate B upon the cross-piece B of the frame and passes through an aperture in another cross-piece in the same frame and engages a plate C se cured to the under face of the top B By the provision of the adjusting screw B, it will be noted that the head of the bed may be raised and held at different elevations, being supported in an adjusted position by the frame B. Mounted upon the frame of the bed are the mattress supporting sections F and H, the former of which is hinged at G to the bedstead and provided with a crosspiece G intermediate which and the bottom of the section F coiled springs l are interposed, one of which is shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The section, designated by letter H, is hinged at H. to the bedstead and is adapted to be raised and lowered through the medium of the levers L which are pivoted at L to the opposite sides of the bed stead, each lever having pivotal link connections L intermediate the same and the bedstead. Fixed to each side of the bedstead is a segment plate K, the teeth of which are adapted to be engaged by a hand-operating pawl upon each lever.

A swinging supporting plate, designated by letter N, has bearing lugs N which are journaled in apertures in the opposite side rails of the bedstead and one of said lugs is provided with a handle 0 whereby the supporting plate may be swung to different positions and one edge made to engage one or another of the ratchet teeth Q, shown clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thereby forming a rigid support for holding the top at different inclinations.

Between the two sections H and F is a platform M hinged at M, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and its other end is supported by means of the spring-pressed bolt R engaging a keeper B upon one side of the bedstead. A. mattress section, des ignated by letter T, is mounted upon springs T upon the platform and its upper end is flush with the upper surfaces of the mattresses upon the sections F and H.

In operation, when it is desired to raise either one end or the other of the bedstead to give the same a slant from one end to the other, it may be accomplished by one of the screws B or D. Should it be desired to tilt the section H, it may be done through the manipulation of one or the other of the levers L and, by swinging the plate N into corresponding notches upon opposite sides of the section H, the latter may be held at the desired inclination. By the provision of the swinging platform, the latter may be swung down when desired for any purpose.

By the provision of a bedstead made in accordance With my invention, it Will be noted that a simple and efficient device is atforded whereby an invalid may rest in convenient position, either horizontally or inclined and so arranged that the bed may be easily and quickly adjusted to different positions.

What I claim to be new is:

1. An invalid bedstead having hinged sections spaced apart, a section between said first referred to sections and pivoted at one end to one side of the bedstead, a latch for holding the other end of said pivoted section to the opposite side of the bedstead, and means for raising and lowering the bedstead, as set forth.

2. An invalid bedstead having hinged sections spaced apart, springs at the adjacent ends of said sections and resting upon crosspieces upon the bedstead, one of said sections having a series of notches upon the under side thereof, a, supporting plate having lugs journaled 1n the opposite side rails of the bedstead and adapted. to engage said notches, and lever mechanism for raising and lowering the notched section, as set forth.
