No. 133,458. I Patented Nov.26,1872.
@ WITNES SESI INVENTDRI.

UNITED STATES PATEN'I OFFICE.
JOHN LINDSEY, OF LITOHFIELD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRACE-BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,458, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LINDSEY, of Litchfield, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented a certain Improvement in Trace-Buckles, of which the following is a specification;
This invention is an improvement on my patent of March 26, 1872, N0.125,060; and consists in the provision of a coiled spring in the eccentric roller of the trace-buckle, the purpose of which is to prevent the tongue (forming part of said eccentric roller) from disengaging from the trace when the horses are holding back in going down hill, &c. The said spring also causes the tongue to enter any hole brought beneath the point of the tongue when adjusting the trace in the buckle, so that the tongue does not require to be entered by hand.
The drawing represents a perspective view with parts removed to show the coiled spring.
In the drawing, A represents the sides of thebuckle. B are the loops for attachment to padstrap and belly-band. O is the cross-bar for attachment of strap connecting buckle to hame.
F is the buckle-tongue upon aroller, G, eccentrically pivoted to lugs E by pivots g. His a plate connecting the two sides A together. it is a notch in plate H for the reception of the point of the tongue I. I is a loop for the attachment of the breeching-strap. g is a coiled spring, arranged within a recess in the roller G, one end of said spring being attached to said roller G, the other end being secured in a slot in the lugs E of the buckle.
' By this arrangement the tongue F is prevented from disengaging from the trace in backing or the holding back of the horse in going down hill, &c.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a buckle, of the plate H, eccentric roller Gr 9, lugs E, tongue F, and spring g, all substantially as set forth. v
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my'hand.
JOHN LINDSEY.
