Metallic Thilll Lug.

WITN ESBEE. INVENTEFL gM/y '72W 2:: 5 a 5, in OMJ.
UNITED STATES HENRY L. NORRIS, OF PROVIDENCE,
PATENT OFFICE.
R. I., ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO JOHN O. HEWES AND HENRY E. OORBIN, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
M ETALLIC TH l LL-LUG.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 241,704, dated May 17, 1881.
Application tiled March 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. NoERIs, of Providence, county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and use- 5 ful Improvement in Metallic Thill-Lugs, my
invention relating to the buckle and loop for holding the upper strap or back-band, together with the device for attaching the lower strap or billet to, as hereinafter described. ro `The object of my inventionV is greater si1nplicity of construction, and at the same time a neater and more convenient article than any heretofore used.
The accompanying drawing, which forms a 15 part ofthis specification, fully illustrates my invention, being a perspective view of a lug complete, and showing all its parts. i
Heretofore in thill-lugs the buckle and accompanying loop for holding the end of the back-band have been constructed and attached in a manner making both an expensive and cumbersome article.
ToV avoid these objections I construct a buckle with a lower part or extension, A B C 25 D, at such an angle with upper part as that in use it will rest upon' the end of the backband, as represented, holding it down upon the side of the lug to which the buckle is attached at the points A D, lbeing free to oscil- 3o late on a rivet, bar, or pivot.
Swinging the buckle forward a little raises (No model.) E
the lower part and renders it much more convenient to remove the end of the bacleband than from an ordinary loop.
The tongue of the buckle is cast with a bar, 35 which is secured at E F, though it may be secured otherwise, if desired. The tongue and bar, being cast together in a solid piece, is more convenient to make, stronger, and less liable to get out of order than when made separate, 4o as heretofore.
The body of the lug is constructed or cast with a T-shaped device at the bottom, as represented, for holding the lower strap or billet. This, being of the shape specitied, can be readily 4 5 cast with the lug without eXtra trouble, and is therefore much cheaper and more convenient than a loop or any similar attachment, at the same time being neater and equally durable.
Having thus fully described and illustrated 5o my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a thill-lug, a buckle having au extension, A B O D, with solid tongue and bar E F, together with a T-shaped device for securing the 5 5 billet at the base, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
HENRY L. NORRIS.
