TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1920.
Application filed July 27, 1918. Serial No. 247,056.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON D. Aonnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Toys, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to toys, and hasfor a general object to provide a novel toy of cheap construction by manipulation of which an o tical illusion is created, having more speci cally the object of rendering the manipulation of the toy more easy.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a side elevation of the toy, indicating in dotted lines the manner in which the handle is grasped.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the handle.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form of handle.
My improved toy comprises 'a pair of weights or balls, 2 and 3, which are attached to the ends of cords 4 and 5. These balls may be made of any suitable material, such as wood, and colored if desired. The opposite ends of the cords 4 and 5 are attached, as indicated at 6, to the shank 7 of the handle by which the toy is manipulated.
This handle is provided with a laterally extending head, which is here effected by making one end of the handle 7 with a T- shaped head 8, the cords 4.- and 5 being secured to the shank of the handle 7 close to hand and while the first is revolving in one direction throwing it in an op osite direct on, causing both balls to revo ve in opposite directions. I As shown in Fig. 1, the handle is held in a manner to cause the outer face 8 of the head 8 to present an inclined surface substantially merging into the line of the fingers, and the cords 4-5 bemg preferably held against the side of the head 8, as indicated in the dotted position 4='-5 in Fig. 1, which has been found to assist in preventing interference of the cords and balls with one another as they rotate in opposite directions.
When the balls are both revolving the illusion is presented'of each ball oscillating back and forth in a semi-circular path, while the practice necessary to acquire the skill to keepthe balls in motion with a slight reciprocatory movement of the hand adds to the amusement and fascination furnished by the toy.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a handle having a slightly modified form of head which may be employed if desired. This handle comprises a shank 10 and T-shaped head 11 but the outer face 11 is rounded or curved from the center toward the ends, as shown.
The cords 4 and 5 are preferably of unequal length to prevent the balls from interferring while revolving.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A toy comprising a handle made from a fiat strip of material. and provided with a T-shaped head having its outer edge presenting an inclined surface extending on either side of the shank of the handle and substantially merging into the line of the fingers of the hand of the manipulator when held thereby at said head portion, a pair of cords secured to the shank of said handle close to said head and adapted to be held against the side of said head and guided by said outer edge thereof when revolved, and a pair of balls attached to the outer ends of said cords.
Signed at the city, county, and State of New York, this 25th day of July, 1918.
MILTON D. ADLER.
