Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 1, 1908.
Patented May 10 191W. Serial No. 451,180.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. SNow, citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatuses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to game apparatuses, and more particularly to an outdoor game for children, embodying a projectile to be thrown into the air, having a soft ball upon one end of sufficient weight to insure the same returning foremost from its flight, and a staff operating as a sling for the projectile, and provided upon one end with a net for catching the projectile ball, and the object of my invention is to provide a game which will be highly interesting while simple, inexpensive and harmless.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, and forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals are used to designate like parts throughout the several figures, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved apparatus in the position for operation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation illustrating the same in position to receive the projectile upon its return from flight. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the projectile, illustrating the ball at one end thereof, and the enlargement at the other end in section, and, Fig. a is a sectional view taken through the slotted end of the stafl.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, I provide a projectile comprising an elastic cord 5, and provided in its length with a plurality of flexible tabs 6, of bright or variable colored worsted or the like. The flexible cord 5 is provided at one of its ends with an enlargement 7 of suitable material, tightly secured about said cord 5 for a purpose to be hereinafter described, and the said cord is provided at its opposite end with a soft ball 8, secured thereto and which may, as herein shown, be in the form of a hollow rubber ball. The ball 8 must, however, be of sulflcient weight to cause the same to travel foremost upon its return line of flight. I also provide a stafl 9, adapted to act as a sling for the projectile, and which to this end, is provided with a notched end 10, adapted for the reception of the flexible cord 5 immediately adjacent its enlarged end 7 as shown in Fig. 1, when by grasping the ball 8, and stretching the said cord 5, and suddenly releasing the same, the entire projectile will be thrown away from the staff 9, its direction of flight being, in accordance with my invention, upward, in order that it may return to the sender. The opposite end of the staff 9 is provided with a net 11, by which the ball 8 may be caught and held upon the return flight of the projectile.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
1. A toy, comprising an elastic member adapted to be cast into the air, said elastic member consisting of a relatively large ball connected by an elastic medium to a smaller ball, said elastic medium carrying a plurality of flexible tabs for producing a noise, said relatively large ball being adapted to travel in advance of said smaller ball by virtue of its weight.
2. In a toy, a staff, a member detachably secured to said staff and adapted to be cast into the air, said member comprising a plurality of balls connected by an elastic section.
3. In a toy, a stalf, a member detachably secured to said staff and adapted to be cast into the air, said member comprising a plurality of balls connected together by an elastic section, and one of said balls being heavier than the other so as to travel foremost during the flight of said member.
4. In a toy, a stafl, a member adapted to be detachably secured to said stafi, comprising a plurality of balls connected by a flexible section, and a net carried by said stafi for catching said member upon its return flight.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN It. SNOW.
