Description

C. L. BROWN.
BOX FORMER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 19. 1919.

UNITED sra'rns PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. nnown, or nonmson, Kansas.
BOX-FORMER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ci-rAnLns L. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Robinson, in the county of Brown, State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful, Box-Former; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to box formers and has for its object to provide means for supporting the ends and partitions of a box preferably an egg case, thereby allowing the sides and bottoms to be easily and quickly formed on the edges of the partitions and end pieces.
A further object is to provide pivoted levers adapted to engage the ends and partitions and force and clamp them against stationary members carried by the forming frame and to provide lever means in connection with said first named levers for holding the clamping levers in clamped position against the action of a spring.
TVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the boX former showing the ends and partitions of an egg crate in position to be clamped in said former.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the box former.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the operating lever showing the spring holding means for the same.
Fig. i is a perspective view of one of the clamping members.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 desi nates a base, said base being formed from two boards 2, which boards are spaced apart in parallel relation to each other so as to form an elongated opening 3. Boards 2 are held in spaced relation. to each other by transversely disposed cleats 4, said cleats having secured thereto vertically disposed upright members 5 and 6, against which members 5 and 6 the end members 7 of an Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
Application filed September 19, 1919. Serial No.- 324,826.
egg crate or the like are adapted to be clamped and held while a crate partition 8 is adapted to be clamped and held against the member 6. Members 6 and 7 are additionally braced by braces 9 having one of their ends secured as at 10 to the rear faces of the vertical members 5 and 6 and their other ends secured as at 11 to the boards End and partition members 7 and 8 having been placed in position against the vertical members 5 and 6, levers 12 are then forced into engagement with the members 7 and 8 at their upper ends 13 thereby clampthe members 7 and 8 against the members 5 and 6. To accomplish this levers 19. are pivoted as at 1a in brackets 15 which are secured as at 16 to the base member 1 and arch the longitudinal opening 3 in the base 1. The lower ends of the levers 12 are pivoted as at 17 to the longitudinally extending connecting bar 18, said bar having secured to its rear end as at 19, a coil spring 20, the other end of which spring being secured to a cross piece 21 as at 22, said spring normally exerting a pulling action upon the connecting bar 18 thereby maintaining the ends 13 of the levers 12 out of engagement with the members 7 and 8 of the crate.
The forward end. of the connecting bar 18 has pivoted thereto as at 2 a lever 25, said lever being adapted to be frictionally held between the convolutions 26 of a bracket 27 formed of spring material. The bracket 27 is secured as at 28 to a cross bar 29 carried by the boards 2 of the base 1. By means of the operating lever 25, the ends 13 are maintained in clamping engagement with the ends 7 and the partition 8 of the crate.
The operation is as follows. End 7 and partition 8 of the egg crate are placed in position shown in Fig. 1, then the operating lever is grasped by the operator and the connecting bar 18 pulled forwardly against the action of the coil spring 20. During this pulling of the connecting bar 18, the op erator forces the operating handle into the spring holding bracket 27 and into the position shown in Fig. 3. Members 7 and 8 having been securely clamped against the vertical members 5 and 6 the operator then nails the bottom and sides onto the edges of the ends and partition. after which the crate having been formed the operating lever is pulled out of engagement withthe spring bracket 27 thereby allowing the coil spring V 20to pull the engaging ends 13 of the levers 12 out of engag'ement, wviththe ends 7 and the partition 8 sothat the crate may bere V moved from the form. V
The'invention having been set forth What "is claimed as new and useful 1s:
' A box former comprising a base, said base i being provided with a'longitudinal opening, upwardly extending members carried by the -base, brackets arching said longitudinal opening, said brackets having pivoted ithereto levers, said levers having their upper ends disposed so as :to clamp the endsand thepartltlon of the box against the upwardly extending members, the lower ends ofsaid leversbeing pivotally connected to a connecting bar, a coil spring connected to rsald connect ng barand to the base member; whereby said engaging ends of the levers V Witnesses:
Will be normally held out" of engagement withtlieends and partition of a box, an operating lever having. one of its ends pivoted V to the end of the connectlng bar, and frictionalholding mean's for the operating lever wvherebywhen the lever is forced: clownwardly into engagement with the frictional pivoted levers will be forced into clamping holding means, theyclamplng ends of the V engagement with the ends and partition of I CLE-MENT'IDOL, 1 MILWARD IDOL.
