UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM E. cum, on MONON, INDIANA CAN LIFTER Application filed September 17, 1929." Serial No. 393,149.
" 1'0 opposite sides of a can or of a receptacle.
A furtherobjectvis to form the 'U-shaped handle members, the eyes carried by the arms thereof and the U-shaped .jaws from a single piece of material bent to form.
A further object is toform the pivot bar from a piece of rod materialv bent to form loops engaging the inner eyes of the pivoted: members and the hooked portions extending throughthe eyes of the pivoted members for pivotally connecting the eyes together.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth,
, shown in the drawing, described and claimed,
, it being understoodthat changes in the pre ciseembodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing fromthespirit of the invention. i
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lifter.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional View taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure3 is a perspective view of one of the combined handle and jaw members of the lifter. W Y i Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional View through the central portion of the lifter.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the'U-shaped handle members of the lifter, whichmembers are in crossed relation at A as clearly shown in Figure 1. The arms 2 of the handle members extend downwardly and are bent to form eyes 8, which registerwith each other and extend inwardly to receive the hooked ends 4 of the pivot bar 5. Pivoted bar 5, adjacent its hooked ends 4, is bent to form eyes 6, which engage the inner sides of the inner eyes 3 as clearly shown in Figure 2 and maintain his signature.
the eyes in relatively close position during a jar lifting operation, at which time the handle members are forced together by the operator grasping the transverse portions 7 thereof. The single wire from which the movable parts are formed preferably terminate at 8 in the handle members 7.
Extending downwardly from theeyesfi, and at an angle tothe U-shaped handle members 1 are U-shaped jaws 9, which are formed from the same piece of material and have their lower ends bent to form horizontal jar or can engaging members 10. v
In operation the operator spreads the handle members 1 which are in crossed rela tion, and which action spreads the gripping jaws 9 so a jaror can can be received between the arcuate portions 10 of the device. After placing the device over a can or jar the op erator grasps both transverse members f the handles and forces the same together,
thereby forcing the arcuate members 10 into close binding engagement with opposite sides of a can or other receptacle, therefore it will be seen that receptacles will be easily handled particularly when hot as in canning. It will also be seen that the device is formed from relatively heavy wire bent to form, there by reducing the cost of manufacture to, a
minimum and allowing the device to be constructed byrelatively cheap labor. Handle members 7 are preferably provided with a wire wrapping 11 formed from relatively small wire so as to increase theJdiameter of the gripping members, therebyincreasing the gripping power which the operator may place on the device.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is v p A ar lifter'comprising pivoted members, said members having opposite arms, registering eyes carried by said opposite arms, a pivot bar extending through said eyes, said pivot bar terminating in hooked members to the outside of the registering eyes, said bar havingeyes therein disposed to the inside of the reglstering eyes. i g i In testimony whereof he hereunto aflixes
