Specification of Letters iatent.
' P tent areb. in; 1920.
- Application filed September 16, 1919. Serial No. 324,085.
vide a device of this character capable of being easily applied to a can and arranged to permit the user to lift and carry the can with one hand without danger of the lifter becoming disengaged fromthe can.
Another object is to provide a device of this character including a pair of arms, each arm comprising a pair of elongated mem: bers, one member of each pair being interposed between the elongated members of the adjacent pair and in cross relation there to, the separated ends of each pair of elongated members caused bythe intersection of the members serving as sockets to'pivotally support the connecting links of the arms.
Another object is to provide a device of this characterincluding a pair of arms each comprising a pair of elongated members secured to each other ad acent thelr lower ends, the lower ends diverging and arranged to firmly support a segmental jaw and force it into engagement at all points with the container to be lifted.
These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying draw-- ings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lifter constructed in accordance with my invention; I
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the pivotal connection of the links and handle, the handle being shown in section.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates one 1 arm of the lifter and 6 the other arm. Each the ends 9, the ends 9 diverging from the secured portion and are skewed, as at 11. Secured to the skewed ends is a segmental 1 gripping jaw 12 having ali ning of-corrugated rubber on its inner face to protect the container. The upper ends 8 of the elongated members are spread to permit an elongated member of one pair to be disposed between the elongated members of the adjacent pair in cross relation thereto,
the arms being pivoted to; each other at 6E) said crossingby a pin 14. The-upper ends of each pair are disposed in spaced relation to each other in View of the interpositioning" H of the elongated member of the adjacent pair and thereby provide sockets 15. Piv-.
oted atone end in the socket 15 of each pairof elongated members is a link 16, the remaining end 17 of each link being pivoted to each other, as at 18. A handle 19 is provided and comprises an elongated strip havev ing its ends bent upon themselves and extended. downwardly, the ends being apertured, as at 20, and are pivotally'connected, as at 18, to the ends of the links 16.
Inuse, by depressing the handle .19 the links 16 cause the upper ends of thearms 5 and 6 to diverge and permit the segmental jaws 12 to engage the container. 'VVhen the handle is raised upwardly in the lifting operation, the links 16 cause the jaws 12 to portant function so that ,no material is wasted in the construction of this lifter.
In addition to this, the novel pivotal connection of the arms to each other efficiently" supports each member of the arm, while the divergent ends of each pair of elongated members are connected to each segmental jaw at a point between the ends of the jaw and its intermediate portion, which causes the jaw to firmly engage the container at. all points. Furthermore, the novel construction of the handlepermits a firm grip on the lifter and at the same time, in view of the novel link connection, eliminates the use of an additional-handle and thereby per- I mits the user to operate two lifters at one time by carrying a can with each hand.
I claim:
In a device of the character described in- I eluding a pair of arms, each arm comprising a pair of elongated members secured to each other adjacent :their lower ends, said lower ends diverging from the secured portion, a segmental jaw carried by said divergent ends, one elongated member of the pair of one arm being interposed between V the pair of elongated members of the other arm in cross relation and pivoted to each other, the upper ends of each pair of elonin spaced relation to each other, a link pivoted between said upper ends of the elongated members of each pair, the other ends of said links being pivoted to each other,
and a handle carriedby the last mentioned pivotal connection of the links.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affizt'my signature.
V FRANK MULLEN.
