Be it known that I, JOSHUA S. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of a'yne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hatpin-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hat pin guards and is particularly offthe 'type which "are passed over the pointed end of the hat pin to prevent the loss of the pin or the injury ordinarily inflicted upon persons coming into contact with the unprotected point of the hatpin. v
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character including a spring pressed member which is urged against the pin inserted in the device, thereby making a frictional contact with the pin and preventing the device from being lost from the hat pin, or the pin from becoming lost.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is strong, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and efilcient in practice.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention the numeral 4 designates an ordina hat pin rovided upon the end opposite its point, with a head 5 of any suitable design.

having a substantially wedge shaped opening 11 therethrough, and isarranged to operate in 'thecavity 7 adjacent the bore therein. The opening 11 is arranged so that the Wedge shaped sides of this opening engage with the hat pin when the pin is inserted into the chamber 9. It will be noted that the opening 11 extends the full width of the locking member 10 and is of the same dimensions throughout its entire length. By this construction it will be apparentth'at "both sides of the wedge sha )e'd opening will en'- gage with the hat pin w eninserted into the device, and will exert a wedging 'acti'onupo'n the pin thereby holding it in the cavity 9 more firmly than has been experienced in former devices. The top of this opening is substantially circular and terminates at its lower end in the said wedge shape. Two oppositely arranged threaded openings are provided in the locking member and are adapted to be alined with the oppositely arranged openings in the walls of the cavity 9, to receive a lower guide pin 12, and a push pin 13 which is provided with a head upon its outer end. The threaded portion of these pins is adapted to be received in the threaded openings in the locking member, while the other portions are adapted to pass through and beyond the openings in the cavity walls, and thereby form a guide in order that the locking member may reciprocate therein. A spring 14 having one end secured to the inner wall of the cavity 9, and the opposite end thereof bifurcated to receive the pin 12, is adapted to normally urge the opening in the locking member out of alinement with the bore to receive the pin. It will be noted that the free end of the spring engages the locking member so that the sides of the wedge shaped portion of the opening 11 are normally urged into a wedging action with the pinwhen the pin is inserted in the cavity 9. At the outer end 15 of the bore the walls thereof are'fiared outwardly to readily guide the point of the pin into the guard.
To use the guard, the ordinary hat pin 4 is passed through the hat and hair of the wearer in the usual manner until the point thereof extends beyond one of the sides of the hat. The guard is grasped so that one finger exerts a pressure on the head of the pin 13 and slides the locking member down against the tension of the spring '14. In this position the substantially circular portion of the opening 11 is in alinement with the bore through the guard. The pointed end of the pin is then guided into the bore and through the opening in the locking member 10 until the point of the pin engages the bottom of the recess formed in the head 6. When the pin attains this position, the pressure upon the pin 13 is released and the spring 14 forces the sides of the wedge shaped portion of the opening in the locking member against the pin and thereby prcvents the guard from becoming disengaged with the pin. To release the pin from the guard, the push pin is actuatedto alinc the opening 11 with the bore through the member 7 and the pin is then withdrawn.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described my invention I claim:
A hat pin guard comprising an elongated hollow member thus forming an internal chamber, said member also being provided with a reduced longitudinally extending bore communicating with one end of said chamber, a plate like looking member having pins extending from opposite ends thereof and passing outwardly through said member to constitute a guide for said locking member, whereby the locking member may be shifted, said plate like looking mem her also having an opening therein which is wedge shaped at one end, one of said pins having a head on its outer end, a flat spring fixed within said first mentioned member and extending longitudinally of said chamber, said flat spring having a bifurcated end engaging about one of said pins to force the locking member in one direction to cause the opening thereof to slightly extend across the inner e-nd of said bore, as and for the purposes set forth.
