VVILMOT B. HULL, OF VELLINGTON, KANSAS.
CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,110, dated May 22, 1894.
Application filed August 23,1895'. Renewed April 18, 1894. Serial No. 508.049- (No model-i To all wiz/'0m it may concern:
Beitknown that LWILMor B. HULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellington, in the county of Sumner and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Clevis, of which the following is a speciiica- `tion.
My invention relates to improvementsV in clevises; the objects in view being to so construct a clevis as to lock ina convenient and expeditious manner the pin therein thus preventing the same from becoming accidentally lost or withdrawn.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter speciied and particuing the upper terminal 2 and the lower terminal 3. These terminals, as usual, are thickened at their extremities or adjacent to the same and perforated forming eyes t for the reception of the pin 5. The pin 5 is of the usual construction in this instance, with the exception that its smaller, lower or unheaded end is provided at a point slightly beyond the lower eye with an annular recess 6. The metal on the under side of the clevis is slotted or recessed as at 7, said slotextending longitudinally from a point at the perforation or eye in the terminal, forward, and opposite openings 8 are formed in the side walls of the slot between the ends thereof. Thus I produce practically an X-shaped slot or recess. The upper walls of the slot 7 are provided with dovetailed ways or grooves 9, and the slot is covered by a removable sliding cover l0 fitting therein. Seated in the recess thus formed is a sliding bolt 11, the same being provided at opposite sides with lateral extensions or ears 12 which project through the recess 8. The bolt back of these transverse extensions is made cylindrical, and fitted thereover is a coiled spring 13 whose opposite end rests against the recess '7. Thespring is an expansive one and tends to force the bolt forward so that its operating end takes normally into the path of the eye 4 of the terminal.
This completes the construction of the clevis, and the operation thereof Vis as follows:- The pin is inserted downwardlyinto the eyes of the clevis in the usual manner, and inas- -much as its lower end is slightly beveled, it
rides by the bolt 11, forcing the latter backward against the tension Vof its spring, and continues this movement until the annular groove in the pin is coincident with the bolt, when the said bolt being no longer influenced against the spring is shot into the groove and hence prevents a withdrawal of the pin. Access to the interior of the locking mechanism may be readily had by sliding the cover from over the recess. In order to withdraw the pin it is necessary to employ the thumb and forefinger in gripping the bolt at the lateral extensionsand withdrawing the same against the spring, the said extensions moving in the recess 8. This withdraws the operating end of the bolt from the recess of the pin and permits the withdrawal of the latter.
It will beseen from the foregoing description that I have provided a very simple manner of securely locking a elevis-pin in position in a clevis, and that I thereby avoid the danger of any accidental withdrawal of the pin and its loss, as often occurs by the use of the ordinary pin.
I do not limit my invention to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, but hold that I may make such variations therein as may be found necessary in the practical use of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof or sacrificing any of the advantages.
Having described my invention, what I claim is v t 1. The combination with a clevis having a eyes in its terminals and one of the latter recessed, and a pin having an annular groove beyond one of said eyes, of a spring-actu- IOO ated bolt arranged on the terminal beyond which the groove is located and adapted to engage the groove, and a sliding cover Ylet into the sides of the recess over the bolt sub-Y stantially as specited.
2. The combination with the clevis, the
terminals of which are provided with eyes and upon its under side Vwith a longitudinal recess having dovetailed grooves and lateral openings in its side Walls, a sliding cover arranged in the grooves, a bolt having lateral extensions arranged in the recess and projecting through theopenings, a coiled spring lin rear of the bolt between the lateral extensions thereof and the ends of the recess, of a 15 .pin having an annular recess fol engaging with the end of the bolt, substantially as specified. r
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as m-y own I have hereto aixed my signature in :o the presence of two witnesses. f
