"22 then slitting the An escutcheon plate 26 has a fixed pin slidable in a slot 28 adjacent to the port 29, whereby said port may be covered to keep out dampness, when the knife is not in and has a knob 27 for operating it.
The slide 17 is slidable upon supporting brackets 7 fixed on the inner side walls of the boxing. A flat bar 24 is fixed in the upper part of the boxing longitudinally along the under face of the glass 4 to abut upon the card 18 near and lengthwise of the slot in said slide, to afford an abutment, whereby when the knife 21 is moved throu 11 said slot its cutting edge 22 may sever the card in twain preventing the card from buckling.
I have mounted a releasable locking device in the boxing to engage and lock the sllde 17 therein, and prevent its removal by any other means than the cutting-device or knife 21. This locking device comprises a pair of plate-springs l5 fixed on the boxing part 1 andextending toward and engaging with their free ends lugs 14: on the bottom of the slide 17. The springs are fixedly connected by a cross-bar of triangular cross-section 16.
The card 18 being inserted in the engaging margins of said slide, the slide is moved to its position in said boxing, and can only be removed as follows. The knife 21 is intruded through the port 29, its cutting edge card in two, and when the end of the knife reaches the triangular bar 16, the bar rides over its edge, thus lifting the springs out of engagement with the lugs 14:, so that the further progress of the after year,
knife can cause it to push the slide partially out of the port 30, as far as permitted by engagement of the end of the trough 13 with the boxing, when the card may be removed, being cut into two parts, effectually mutilating it to prevent its illegitimate alteration and reuse. I 1
These license-card holders may be fastened upon a vehicle, and may be used year the new cards issued being inserted after the mutilated card has been re moved.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is: 1. In a device of the character described, a closed boxing having a card inlet port, said boxing havin a knife inlet port, and a disconnected knifeblade movable through the latter port and adapted to mutilate the card introduced into the boxing through said card inlet port.
2. In a device of the character described, a closed hollow boxing having a transparent top, said boxing having at opposite ends inlet ports for a card and for a knife respectively, means within said boxing for supporting said card, and a disconnected use,
knife movable through a knife inlet port removably and adapted to mutilate said card within the boxing.
3. In a device of the character described, a closed hollow boxing having a transparent top, said boxing having inlet ports at its opposite ends, supporting means within the boxing, a card positioned upon said sup porting means and removable through one of the inlet ports, means for releasably looking said card within the boxing, and a knife movable through the other inlet port and adapted to first mutilate said card, and sec 0nd, to release said card locking means, in succession.
4C- In a device of the character described, a closed hollow boxing having a transparent top, said boxing having inlet ports at its opposite ends, a slide having engaging I means, and provided with a longitudinal slot extending nearly its entire length, a card removably mounted on said slide over said slot and releasably secured in said engaging means, supporting means within said boxin said slide being movable through one of said inlet ports and supported upon said supporting means, a locking device within said boxing adapted to releasably lock said slide within the boxing, a knife adapted to pass through the other inlet port movable through the slot in said slide and having an edged extremity adapted to split said card apart, said knife being positioned to engage said slide locking means near the end of its cutting stroke to release said locking means from said slide.
5. In a device of the character described, a closed hollow boxing having a transparent top, said boxing having inlet ports at its opposite-ends, a slide having engaging means, and provided with a longitudinal slot extending nearly its entire length, a card removably mounted on said slide over said slot and releasably secured in said engaging means, supporting means within said boxing, said slide being movable through one of said inlet ports, and s'u ported upon said supporting means, a 100 ing device within said boxing adapted to releasably lock said slide within theboxing, a knife adapted to 115 pass through the other inlet port movable through the slot in said slide and having an edged extremity adapted to split said card apart, said knife being positioned to engage said slide locking means near the end of itsv 120.
having card engaging means and movable into said boxing through the other inlet port, said slide when within the boxing being fixed upon said troughed element, and having a longitudinal groove in registration .with its trough, a card mounted on said slide, resilient locking means within said boxing adapted to releasably engage and lock the slide within the boxing, and an operating element movable through the first mentioned inlet port, the trough of said supporting element and the slot of said slide, and adapted, first, to mutilate said card, and second, to engage and release said resilient, locking device from said slide, to permit the latter to be withdrawn from the boxing with the mutilated card by way of the other inlet port.
7. In a device of the character described, a closed hollow boxing having a transparent top, said boxing having inlet ports at its opposite ends, a longitudinal. trough support within said boxing with its trough in alinement with one of said inlet ports, a slide having card engaging means and movable into said boxing through the other inlet port, said slide when within the boxing being fixed upon said troughed element, and having a longitudinal groove in registration with its trough, a card mounted on said slide, resilient locking means within said boxing adapted to releasab ly engage and lock the slide within the boxing, and an opcrating element movable through the first mentioned inlet port, the trough of said supporting element and the slot of said slide, and adapted, first, to mutilate said card, and second, to engage and release said resilient locking device from said slide, to permit the latter to be withdrawn from the boxing with the mutilated card by way of the other inlet port, and an abutment plate supported within said boxing against the inner side of its transparent top and positioned over said card adjacent to but not in registration with the slot in said slide to support the card while the latter is being mutilated by said mutilating means.
8. In a device of the character described, a hollow boxing having a closed transparent top, an open bottom, and a marginal flange around its open bottom extended outwardly, a base-plate secured over and covering said open bottom, means for supporting a card within said boxing in proximity to its transparent top, said boxing having an inlet port, and a disconnected cutting-device adapted to be inserted through said inlet port removably to mutilate said card.
9. In a device of the character described, a hollow boxing having a closed transparent top, an open bottom, and a marginal flange around its open bottom extended outwardly, a base-plate covering said open bottom, means for supporting a card within said boxing in proximity to its transparent top, said boxing having an inlet port, and a dis connected oblique edged cutting device adapted to be inserted through said inlet port to mutilate said card, means for locking said card releasably within the boxing, said means being located within the path of movement of saidcutting device, and adapted to be engaged thereby and released, from said card upon the completion of mutilation of the latter.
