rying the same and attached to other ve-- hicles for nefarious purposes. A further object is the provision of a license tag holder that embodies the desirable features of simplicity in construction and thorough efficiency and reliability in practical use.

To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the improvement hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

The holder is of a size to snugly accommodate therein license tags issued by the cities in the various States throughout the Union. These tags are of a uniform size and thickness. In this connection it will be well to state that the holder may be efiiciently employed as a frame for cards, signs, pictures, etc.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates the substantially k rectangular flat body of the holder. The body is of rectangular formation and has its longitudinal edges and one of its ends formed with a continuous flange 2 that overlies the body proper and which flange has its inner edge formed with a continuous groove 3. The

The plate or slide has its outer end formed with a flange 12 of the same size and shape as the flange 2, the said flange 12having an inner longitudinal groove 13 (dotted lines Figure 1) to register with the groove 3 in the flange 2 and the ends ofthe=said flange 12, are cutangularly, asat 14, to contact with the angle ends 4 of the longitudinal flanges 2 and afford a neat joint between the slide and body.

The plate comprising the slide, at a suitable distance inward of the flanged end thereof, is provided with an opening 16 which is comparatively long and wide and the longitudinal walls provided by the opening are preferably arched and communicate with the; longitudinal groove or depression 17 on the inner face of the said slide 11. In this groove or recess there is approximately centrally pivoted, as at 18, a dog 19. The dog has attached thereto one end of a compression spring 20 received in the notch 21 that'communicates with the groove 17 and attached to the lower wall of the said notch. The spring forces the active or toothed end 22 of the dog toward the lower wall provided by the groove 17, and such movement is limited by the tail end 23 of the dog contacting with the upper wall afforded by the said groove 17. The head of the dog is rounded and it will be apparent that after the license plate 24 is arranged in the groove 13 of the flange 12 the slide, and the license plate will be moved into the grooved flange of the body 1 and that the active end of the dog 22 will ride over'the rounded outer edge 25 of the keeper 10, and thereafter, through the instrumentality of the spring 20, be brought to locking engagement with the teeth. When the slidable plate, carrying the license tag 24 is thus locked in g the body it becomes permanently fixed tothe said body and neither the tag nor the slide can be removed from the body, without mutilating the tag. It will be further apparent that the holder is firmly locked on the automobile and consequently neither the tag nor the holder can be separated to permit of the tag being employed for nefarious purposes. To remove the tag it is necessary that the same be cut opposite the opening 16 and that the tail end 22 of the dog 19 be depressed to bring the dog out of engagement with the keeper. To facilitate this the outer face of the slide, in a line from the upper and lower walls afforded by the opening 16 and in close proximity to the groove or recess 17, is provided with alining notches 26 in'which are received the loose ends 27 of the plate 28. This plate, when the tag is partly cut away is removed from its seat and is arranged in the dotted line position disclosed by Figure 8 of the drawing so that the operator grasping the bar 28 and exerting a pressure thereagainst will swing the dog to bring its active end out of engagement with the keeper 10 appreciated by those skilled in the art to which the invention relates. Obviously I do not wish to be restricted to the precise details of construction as herein set forth and, therefore, hold myself entitled to make such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what I claim.-

Having described the invention, I claim:

In a device for the purpose set forth, a rectangular body having two of its edges and one of its-ends provided with anoutstanding inwardly directed flange, a keeper in the body, a rectangular slide having a longitudinal groove on one of. its faces, and an enlarged opening communicating with the groove, and said slide having one of its ends provided with an outstanding inwardly directed flange to receive' therein a license plate, a pivotally supported spring influenced dog in the groove of the slide to engage with the keeper when the slide is moved into the body for locking the slide and license tag in the body and said tag, when the same is to be removed designed to be cut away in a line with the groove to permit access being obtained to the dog to swing the latter out of engagement with the keeper and to likewise permit the withdrawal of the slide from the body. V
