This invention relates to book holders and is particularly adapted for holding books which are provided with paper covers, or other temporary covers, and which, like tele- A phone directories, are intended to be used only for a limited time.

One of the primary objects of the invention is to provide a holder equipped with 1 binding mechanism of simple and staunch construction which will serve to hold a book securely therein even when subjected to rough treatment. Another object of the invention is to provide means wherebythe .y book holder may be handled with facility and which will also prevent disengagement of the binding mechanism during rough usage.

Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.

` The invention is fully described inthe following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book holder and binding mechanism embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a broken vertical sectional view; Fig. 3 is a sectional View, the section being taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. l is a fragmentary lvertical sectional view similar to Fig. 2

In the illustration given, 1 represents a book holder; 2, a metal strip or plate secured to the rear portion of the book cover and having upwardly turned ends 3. The upward turned ends 3 are preferably provided with slots 4. The plate or metal strip 2 may be secured to the book cover in any desirable manner, as, for example, by rivets 5.

To secure a book to the plate or metal strip 5, a binding bar 6 is employed. This preferably comprises a wide thin strip of `metal provided near its ends with notches er teeth 7. Preferably, each of the notches 7 has a long inclined edge 8 leadingtoward the ends of the bar and a rearwardly turned hook-like edge 9. The segments of the bar l 6, which extends beyond the notches 7 are i `perforated at l0 to receive split rings 11.

In placing the binding blade 6 in position upon the book, some pressure must be exerted to force the lblade downwardly against the leaves Vand book cover of the book. On the release of pressure, the binding bar is thrust upwardly by the compressed leaves and cover and this serves to hold thenotches of the bar securely against the upturned ends 3 of the metal strip or plate. To prevent accidental disengagement of the binding bar with the upturned ends 3, the split rings ll areinserted within the perforations 10. The ringsalso enable the book holder to be readily secured by chains, or other means, to the desk or platform. l

It will be observed that with the wideV blade-like binding bar employed, the notches 7 may be made sufficiently deep to serve as satisfactory latches for the bar and, also, that the width of the segments extending beyond the notches enables the perforations 10 to be made largeenough to receive rings 11k withoutv materially weakening the strength of the bar. At the same time, the thin or blade-like character of the binding barV 6 enables it to securely hold a book within the holder without interferingiwith' the compact arrangement of its leaves.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding. only and no unnecessary limitationsshould be understood therefrom, but theappended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view ofthe prior art.

What Iregard as new, and desire tosecure f by Letters Patent, is:

l. A. detachable book holder comprising acover, a metal strip secured to said cover and having upturned ends, saidv ends being provided with slots, and a binding bar adapted'tolpass between the pages of a book" and having its ends equipped With notches,

vthe ends of said binding bar being adapted to pass through and extend beyond said slots, the notches thereon being adapted to 5 engage the upturnedy ends of said metal strip.

2. In va device of the character set forth,

a cover, a metal strip secured to the rear portion thereof, said metal strip having its ends upturned and provided With slots and a blade-like binding bar adapted to pass through said slots and equipped With catches adapted to engage said upturned ends, and

means adapted to releasably engage the ends of said binding bar and to prevent the Withdrawal of said bar from said slots.

3. In a device of the character set forth,

a cover, a metal strip secured to the rear portion thereof, said metal strip having its ends upturned and provided With slots and a blade-like binding bar adapted to pass through said slots and equipped With catches adapted to engage said upturned ends, said binding bar having also its ends perforated, 2:51 and rings adapted to releasably engage said perforations.

A detachable book holder comprising a cover, a metal strip secured to the rear portion thereof, said metal strip having its n ends upturned and provided with interlocking means, a binding bar equipped With interlocking means adapted to engage the interlocking means With which the upturned ends of the metal strips are provided so as 3Q g to releasably secure said binding bar against -longitudinal movement, said binding bar having an end extending beyond said interlockingv means, and means adapted to releasably engage an end` of s aidl binding bar to :gprevent the disengagement of said interlocking means.

A detachable book holder comprising a cover, a metal strip secured to the rear portion thereof and provided with interlocking means, and a binding bar equipped with interlocking means adapted to engage the interlocking means With which the upturned ends of the meta-l strips are provided so as to releasably secure said binding bar against Wglongitudinal movement, said interlocking means comprising a slot and a projection to engage said slot, and means adapted to releasably engage an end of said binding bar 56, \toprevent the removal of said bar.

6. In adevice of the character set forth, a cover, a metal strip secured to the rear portion thereof and provided with interlocking'means, a binding bar provided With interlocking means adapted to engage the interlocking means With Which the metal strip is provided to prevent longitudinal movement of said bar, said bar having an @5..end extending beyond said interlocking means and perforated, and a ring adapted to engage said perforation.
