The edges of the flanges respectively engage stop lugs 8 8 formed by indenting the side walls of the case to limit the inward swing of the platen and station the platen within the case with its upper surface slightly recessed below the top edge of the side walls, so that the upper portion of the side walls serves to longitudinally guide and confine the portion of the webs upon the writing table against lateral displacement.
The rear end of the writing platen is scrolled to provide a curved end, over which the webs can freely pass as they are withdrawn over the platen from the supply compartment therebeneath. The front wall 9 of the case is inclined inwardly to have the front end of the writing platen overlap and project therebeyond within the dimensions of the case, and provides a finger clearance to enable the leading end of the webs to be manually grasped for withdrawal. The platen, centrally at its forward end, has a notch I for access into the leading end of the webs.
A cross bar II extends across the forward end of the writing table and has its opposite ends bent at an angle or flanged for hingedly connecting the same to the side walls of the case, swinging on the fulcrurn which hinges the platen to the casing. The cross bar is spaced slightly from the top of the platen for threading the leading ends of the webs therebetween and provides a passageway through which the webs are withdrawn. The cross bar carries a pair of pins I 2-I2 fixed to and laterally projecting respectively from the opposite ends of a leaf spring I3, fixed to the top side of the cross bar at a slightly elevated position therefrom.
Each of the pins is adapted to engage through an aperture in the cross bar and through an aperture in the webs when brought in registration therewith to arrest web withdrawal. The pins are expressed from the aperture to permit web withdrawal by a slide plate Ill, slidably mounted upon the upper side of the cross bar II, intermediate the cross bar and pin carrying leaf spring I3.
The slide ill has a central elongated notch I traversed by a. stationery guide I6, elevated from the top of the cross bar II upon which the pin carrying leaf spring I3 is mounted and fixed. A pair of cam or wedge formations ll-I 'i are struck up from the body of the plate to provide inclines engaging beneath the leaf spring I 3 at relative opposite sides of its mounting, upon sliding the plate I4 rearwardly, elevating the pins to extract ie same from the web controlling apertures I-d.
The forward end of the slide plate is of a formation providing a thumb hold I8 and a tear edge I9 for continuing the forward tear edge of the cross bar il, which is interrupted by a notch 2D cut into the cross bar II which the slide plate gaps. The notch 2G, at the forward edge of the cross bar, provides a clearance to expose a portion of the leading edge of the webs when the slide is thrust rearwardly by the thumb of one hand of the operator, uncovering the notch, allowing the thumb to be brought on the upper side of the leading edge of the webs and the forefinger on the lower side *hereof through the notch I0 in the front end of the writing platen.
The slide is automatically retracted by a spring ZI as the operator releases the same while withdrawing the web, which again frees the pins I2-I 2, adapting the same to yieldingly bear upon the webs ready to snap through a successive set of apertures when brought into registry therewith for stopping web withdrawal. The spring 2| is of bar type, centrally fixed upon the guide I6, thereby providing oppositely extended limbs having their free ends connecting with the slide plate, preferably by engagement, each through an eye 22 formed by outwardly expressing a loop from the body of the slide plate.
The rear margin of the slide plate is angled to form a stop flange 23 for engagement with the rear edge of the cross bar I I for limiting the normalizing movement of the slide plate. The slide plate, moving in a plane parallel with the webs, is moved rearwardly without effort and under the act of obtaining a ingerhold upon the leading edge of the webs, thereby lifting the pins out of the web apertures. The parts automatically move to their normal positions as the fingers of the operator move away from the same in the act of withdrawing the webs for a successive functioning of the pins, to arrest web advance after a measured web withdrawal interval, thereby aiording a facile method of operation.
The writing platen and the cross or tear bar being hinged to swing in the same direction allow both to be simultaneously moved to an open position upon raising the platen for access into the case when it is necessary to replenish the web supply, and upon closing the platen the cross bar will remain in its open position to facilitate in threading the leading edge of the webs therebeneath and for adjusting the webs to bring the edges in a position for registration with the arresting pins, and restrained against movement upon swinging the cross bar to its normal or closed position.
For manifolding work a plural ply of webs is employed and a carbon coated sheet 24 is interleafed between adjoining portions or sections of the webs disposed over the writing table, the carbon sheet extending longitudinally with the direction of web withdrawal and having a margin of its rear end lapped over a flexible metal strip 25 to bind the same against displacement or from being disturbed under the advancing pull of the webs in extracting a leading section thereof.
The margin of the carbon coated sheet is preferably lapped over the cross strip 25 in a manner in which its carbon coated side is unexposed and bears against the opposite side of the strip to avoid web smudging when the webs are withdrawn.
A iiexible metal guard strip 26 is disposed over the rear end of the writing table and bears upon the webs to hold the same flat upon the writing table. The opposite ends of the cross strips 25 and 26 are formed with tabs for socketing into apertured ears or lugs 27 struck out of or secured on the side walls of the case. The carbon sheet holding strips and the guard strip for the construction shown are displaceably mounted for facilitating in interleang the carbon sheets between the webs and in adjusting the same upon the writing table, although it is obvious that these parts may be permanently mounted upon the case or writing platen if desired.
For some' uses it is desirable to store the duplicate copies of the sheet sections as they are dispensed and severed from the web, within a receptacle or compartment within the case. Therefore, as shown in Figures 7 and 8, the writing platen is formed of double panels, preferably from a single sheet of material, with the space intervening the panels providing a receptacle 28 partially open at its front end, the rear end being closed by the wall joining the panels and which is rounded to serve as a guide for freely translating the webs thereover in extending the same from the storage compartment onto the upper panel, as a writing platen.
The front end of the lower panel is bent inwardly to provide a partial closure for the front end of the receptacle and with the upper panel forms a slot opening through which the sheet sections can be slipped for deposit within the receptacle 28, one upon another, the deposited sections being conned within the receptacle against accidental discharge under the portable use of the apparatus.
One or both sides of the receptacle are open for removal of the sheet sections when the receptacle or panel unit is swung to an open or upright position, with the side Walls of the case serving as closures for the open sides of the receptacle when the panel unit is closed.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. In a device ofthe class described, a case for compactly housing a fiat package of continuous web stationery, a Writing platen providing a top for the case over which a leading end of the web, unfolded from the package, is extended for writing thereon, a cross bar bridging the platen at a web delivery end of the case, a leaf spring xed upon the cross bar to provide a pair of oppositely extended limbs, each carrying a pin for movement transversely to the platen for engaging through apertures in the web to arrest web withdrawal, and a reciprocable slide on said cross bar for flexing the limbs to extract the pins from the web apertures, the slide actuated by a finger thrust in the act of the operator grasping the leadingend of the web for withdrawing the same, accessible from beneath said slide.

In a device of the class described, a case for compactly housing a flat package of continuous Web stationery, a double-Walled top liftably mounted between the side walls of the case and providing a Writing platen, over which a leading end of the web, unfolded from the package, is extended for writing thereon, said top forming a storage receptacle and having a constricted opening at the web dispensing end of the case for depositing dispensed web sections after being severed from the web, and said top having a full, open side normally closed by a side wall of the case for discharging the stored sections upon lifting the top from. the case.
