I Claims.

This invention relates particularly to an improved door forholding slips ofv stationery in a storage compartment of .an autographic register and facilitating the removal of the slips when de- 5 sired.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may form part of the bottom wall of the register.

In the embodiment illustrated A designates an autographic register casing having a supply compartment A and a storage compartment A B, a suitable registering and initial feed device; and C, a trap door for the storage compartment A The casing of the register is of known construction having a bottom wall 5, a platen forming top 6, a partition I separating the supply compartment A from the storage compartment A and a skeleton cover 8 which is hinged to the 3 bottomwall of the casing at 9 and has side walls which serve to enclose the platen'and underlying mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, the record compartment is provided with an adjustable abutment l I which may be moved back and forth along the slot 12 to adjust the length of the compartment A. In like manner, the storage compartment A is provided with an abutment l3 which is held in position by a screw l4 slidably mounted in a slot l5 provided in the bottom wall 5.

No invention is claimed herein in the registering and initial feed device B which has register pins l6 which are urged upwardly to engage per- 4 forations in stationery drawn from the supply compartment over the platen 6. The mechanism is provided with a front handle H which is adapted to swing the pins forwardly so that ends of the stationery strips may be grasped by hand and drawn outwardly to a position where they may be severed on the tear-off edge l8 provided on the skeleton cover 8.

All of the above structure is known in the art and no invention is claimed herein. However,

as best shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, the front end of the skeleton cover member is provided with a curved fixed guide I9 disposed above a fixed crossbar 20 to provide a slip-admitting slot 2|.

The front portion of the bottom wall 5 is cut away and provided with the trap-door C which 5 is connected to the bottom of the casing by means of a traverse hinge 22. A stop member 23 is provided to limit the downward travel of the door, as indicated in Fig. 3. A keeper 24 has its end portions turned downwardly and outwardly 10 and is fixedly connected to the trap-door by means of rivets 25. The front end portion of the partition I is cut away adjacent to the guide member l9 so that the keeper may extend upwardly beyond the slip-admitting slot 2|. 5

The trap-door is provided with outwardly extending arms 26 to which are connected tension springs 21 which serve to yieldingly hold the trap-door in either its fully opened or fully closed position. As shown in Fig. l, the front go end portion of the trap-door is urged upwardly against the cross-bar 20 and is inclined upwardly from the plane of the bottom wall 5. Thus it will be understood that when a record slip is projected through the slot 2 I, it will slide by gravity 25 rearwardly to the abutment l3 and its front end will rest on the top of the cross-bar 20. The door is then flipped downwardly and upwardly so that the keeper 24 will draw the end of the slip beneath the cross-bar 20 where the slip will be held in position even though the machine is turned up on an end. The front end portion of the trap-door is provided with a finger opening or notch 28 to facilitate grasping the ends of the slips when the trap-door is swung open. In this 35 position the ends of slips which have been projected into the storage compartment will be drawn downwardly by the keeper 24 so that they may all be withdrawn together and will remain in the same order in which they were filed. 40

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible, in View of 45 the prior art.

I claim:

1. A portable autographic register casing having a record compartment in the base of said casing, said record compartment being provided at 50.

its front end with a fixed slip-admitting slot and having a rearwardly hinged trap-door forming part of the bottom wall of said record-compartment and permitting access to the contents thereof, a stop for limiting the downward swing I! of said door, and spring means for urging said door to either of its closed or fully opened positions.

2. A device as specified in claim 1, in which the trap-door in closed position is inclined upwardly beyond the plane of the bottom wall, and said door being provided with a keeper extending upwardly beyond said slot and having a finger opening to facilitate removal of slips from said compartment when the door is opened.

3. In a machine of the character set forth: a casing provided in its lower portion with a storage compartment, said compartment being provided near its front end with a pair of fixed guides spaced to provide a slip-admitting slot and having a hinged trap-door beneath said slot forming part of the bottom wall of the casing and adapted to swing downwardly to open said compartment, said door being provided with means for holding it up normally in closed position.

4. In a machine of the character set forth: a casing provided in its lower portion with a storage compartment, said compartment being in said compartment and vided with a slip-admitting slot and having a hinged trap-door beneath said slot forming part of the bottom wall of the casing and adapted to swing downwardly to open the compartment, said trap-door being provided with means for holding it up normally in closed position, and said door having a keeper extending upwardly beyond said slot so as to embrace stationary slips deposited bend them outwardly when the door is opened.
