This invention relates to a holder for salesslips or forms on which Orders are written, and has as an object thereof the provision of a novel device of the character that will hold the salesslips or order forms in a suitable compartment providing means for automatically positioning the uppermost form or forms to be written on in relation to a writing platen forming a'closure for the order form holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder for forms,'which holder consists of a compartmentalized base member having a closure which is s'lideable to extend beyond an end portion of the base member to provide a hand rest so that the user of the invention may more conveniently make notations on the order form when the form to be written on is positioned on the upper surface of the closure member, which closure member acts as a writing platen.
Further and other objects of the invention may be and may become apparent to one skilled in the art from a perusal of the disclosure herein. The present showing is by way of illustration only of a preferred embodiment of the invention. It is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit thereof as defined by the subjoined claims.
Throughout the specifications and claims, the expression order form or sales-slip may. be used interchangeably, and it is to be understood that either expression refers to the forms carried by the diaphragm regardless whether they are in a pad form, a collection of individual slips, manifold forms or any other material on which writing may be placed, and adaptable for use in the present invention.

A diaphragm 24 has a hinge 25 formed by bending one end of the diaphragm about an elongated pin 26 with the other side of the hinge 21 being also formed about the elongated pin 26 and-being secured" to the bottom portion of the base member 2| by rivetssuch as 28. A U- shaped leaf spring 29 is secured by rivets 30 in the center thereof to the bottom portion of the base member 2!, said leaf spring being bent so that the free ends thereof engage'the underneath surface ofthe diaphragm 24 to urge said diaphragm upwardly so that the pad of order forms 3|, shown dotted, may be gripped; by the pad clip 32, which -pad-.clip hasa lower member 33 riveted to the free end of the diaphragm 24, while the upper member-340i the pad clip 32 is hinged to the lower member 33 by a pin 35. When the closure 22 is snapped into its operative position, as shown in Fig. 3, the spring 29 urges the diaphragm and its pad of order forms 3| upwardly against the underneath surface of the closure. A function of the upwardly urged diaphragm is to create friction on the pad of order forms by the closure member 22 so that the pad of order forms is pinched or gripped between the diaphragm and the closure member. When this condition exists, the form 31 may be withdrawn from the pad which is held by the pad clip 32 without dislodging the remainder of the order forms frictionally held between the diaphragm and the closure member. This condition simulates the holding of the unused forms of the pad by the hand to restrain the unused forms being withdrawn from the clip when the upper form is desired to be withdrawn from the pad clip 32 after the writing has been completed thereon. The used forms, as they are removed from the pad of order forms, may be stored underneath the diaphragm which provides a compartment therefor between said diaphragm and the bottom of the base member 2l.
In the view shown in Fig. 3, one end of the diaphragm is hinged with the free endof said diaphragm being urged upwardly under action of the leaf spring 29.
A modification of the diaphragm'support within the chamber of the holder is shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, wherein channel 38 is vertically disposed on each of two corners of the base member 2|. The modified diaphragm 39 (Fig. 7) has one end thereof formed about an elongatedpin 40, which pin extends from opposite sides of the diaphragm and is adapted to have said ends slideably engage the channel members 38 so that that particular end of the diaphragm may move up and down as the sales-slips or order forms are withdrawn from the pad and inserted beneath said diaphragm. An ear 4|, which is part of the channel, is bent over the top of the channel to form a closure or limiting means so that the elongated pin 40 will not be removable from the channels 38 but may slide up and down therein as necessitated by placing the used order forms under the diaphragm and under influence of the leaf spring 29. The channels 38' are secured by rivets 42 to an end portion of the base member 2| as shown in Fig. 7.
The closure member 22 has one side of the hinge 23 formed thereon with the other side of the hinge 43 havin a pair of elongated slots 44 formed therein, which slots are adapted to slide on headed pins 45, said pins 45 being secured to a side wall 45 of the base member 2|. The length of the side "of hinge 43 is such that it permits movement of'the closure 22 so that said closure may be snapped into operative position as shown in Fig. l; or snapped into its inoperative position asshown in solid lines in Fig. 4. The dotted lines (Fig. 4) of the closure member 22 show said closure'member in its operative position.
The latch mechanism for the closure member has an elongated spring 41 which is shown in solid lines (Fig. 2). Elongated slots are formed adjacent opposite ends of the spring 41 so that pins 48, which are secured to the side wall 49 of the base member 2|, will permit the sprin 4! to be moved to its position shown dotted when the latch button 50 is depressed so that the spring 41 is moved to its unlatched position as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. The latch carried by the spring 4'! has an inclined surface on the upper portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 6, so that when the closure 22 is moved to engage the latch 5| the spring 4! will be urged inwardly of the compartment of the holder until the latch 5| engages either its slot 52 when the closure member 22 is in its inoperative position, or may engage aperture 53 when the closure is moved to its operative position for writing on one of the pad forms positioned thereabove.
To open the holder, it is merely necessary to depress thelatch button 5!] so that the spring 4'! will be moved to the position shown in Fig. 6, thereby permitting the closure member 22 to be pivoted on its hinge 23 so that the closure member may be moved out of the way to permit access to the order form pad.
A clip 54 is secured to the closure member by a rivet 55, and permits papers, cards or other material to be held thereby.
While the leaf spring 29 is shown in one form, it is to be understood that any type of resilient member may be used for urging one end of the diaphragm against the underneath surface of the closure member 22, it being understood that any suitable means may be employed provided adequate friction is permitted for urging the unused order forms against the underneath surface of the closure member 22.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the base member 2| has a bottom portion withtwo side members and two end members, and a closure member slideably hinged adjacent one of the side members, The corners of the end and side members are shown secured by angular brackets 56 with rivets 51. However, it is to be understood that any form of securing these members together may be used, such as by welding, or they may be held otherwise in relative position.
' A modification of the device presented in Figs. 1 to '7 is shown in Figs. 8 to 13 and is a form of the invention particularly adapted for dispensing forms wherein as the top form is removed from the stack of forms the remaining forms or sales slips are urged into positon to be removed successively as desired.

The writing platen 22 in the modified form 0 the invention has a retractile spring 60 having one end thereof connected to 2. lug 6| formed on the side of hinge 43 with the other end of said spring being connected to One of the headed pins 45, as shown in Figs. 9 and 10. When the latch button 5i) is depressed to release the writing platen when in its inoperative position, the spring will immediately snap the writing platen into the position shown in Fig. 10. -By properly positioning the headed pin 45, to which the sprin 68 is attached, in-its respective slot in the side of hinge 43; the writing platen is provided with a limiting means so that the latch 5| will be in substantial registry with its latch slot 52. Thereafter a slight pressure onthe-upper surface of the writingplaten will cause the latch 5| to engage in latch slot 52 and retain the writing-platen in latched operative position as long as the user so desires. i
"The modified diaphragm 62 shown in Figs. 8 to 11 has the free end 53 formed at an incline so that the forms gripped between the diaphragm 62 and the writing platen 22 as presented in Figs. 8 and 10,will be in staggered relation at one end thereof to facilitate removal of said forms from the device, the opposite end of said forms" being held by the pad clip or clamp 64 positioned near the diaphragm hinge end of hinge 26. w
The lower member 65 of Dad clip '54 is secured to the diaphragm 62 by inserting a nut and screw combination 66 through apertures'in lower member 65 which are in registry with complemental apertures such as 61 formed in the diaphragm 62. The pad clip, or clamp, 64 is therefore movable to one of several positions to, permit a variety of formsizes to be used without necessityof concern for desired op'erability of the invention.
In order to provide a modified arrangement with its attendant advantages, the U shaped leaf spring 29 is shown'in Figs. 9, and 11 being secured to a bracket 68 by pins '30, said bracket being spaced from the'bottom of the base member .and being secured to the sides thereof. The U-shaped leaf spring engages an underneath surface of the free end 63 and urges the diaphragm 62 upwardly in the same manner as set forth for diaphragm 24.
The end closure 10 is movably mounted on the base member by a hinge H and may be swung to the open position in Fig. 10 (shown dotted) and Fig. 13 shown in solid lines to permit the used forms to be inserted between the bracket 68 and the base member for entry into the compartment between said base member and the diaphragm.
The end closure is latched in its closed position as shown in Fig. 12 by .a leaf spring latch 12 secured to a side of the base member by pins 13. The free end of said latch 12 has a shoulder 14 which extends through an aperture 15 formed in the end closure I0 to hold the closure in its latched position as shown in solid lines of Fig. 12. The button 16 extends through the aperture of the side so that the leaf spring latch may be operated.
A pair of complemental stop means is positioned on either side of the hinge I I, and each pair consists of a stop 18 secured to the base member, and a stop 18 secured to the end closure 10 by pins 19. When the end closure 10 is down as shown in Fig. 13, it forms a ramp to guide and assist insertion of the forms into the lower compartment of the modification of the invention embracing the sales slip holder or forms dispenser.
Fig. 14 shows a modification of a portion of Z the diaphragm having an upturned lip 80 which may be used as one form of arestraining orlimiting means for the stack of forms 8|. When the lip 80 is employed, the clamp 6 may be eliminated since the pressure of the spring urged diaphragm against the writing platen underneath surface holds the stack of forms in place in the forms dispenser type of modification. Consequently when the upper form 82 is being withdrawn from the stack of forms 8 I, the remainder of said stack impinges the lip 80 and permits the uppermost form to be withdrawn without dislodging the remainder of the stack of forms. While the lip 80 may extend across the full width of the diaphragm, it is to be understood that any suitable type lip or lips,such as spaced fingers, may be utilized without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Further, it will be seen that the slideable closure member forms a writing deck and a hand rest which extends beyond the order form so that the hand of the writer may be adequately supported while writing at the very bottom of the order form or sales-slip. The rigid diaphragm, which may be formed of metal or fibre, may have one end thereof either hinged or disposed partially by channels as shown. However, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto except as embraced by the spirit of the claims attached hereto.

A sales slip holder ofthe class described comprising a base member including a bottom, two end portions and two side portions, a writing platen hingedly connected to one of said side portions and adapted to latch onto the other of said side portions, latch means for securing said writing platen in an operative position, and resilient means for automatically moving said writing platen into substantially an operative position for writing from an inoperative position.
4. A forms dispenser of the class described comprising a base member including a bottom, two end portions and two side portions, a writing platen movably connected to said base member, and a diaphragm movably connected internally of said device and having a portion extending beyond an edge of said writing platen to bend and provide staggered end relation of forms platen is in operative position.
5. A forms dispenser for sales slips and the like comprising a base member, a writing platen 'm'o'vably connected thereto. and positionable in an operative or an inoperative position in relation to said base member, a diaphragm movably connected within said base member and having means for staggering one end of the forms carried by the dispenser when the writing platen is in its operative position, and, means positionable on said diaphragm for holding the forms thereon to accommodate forms of varying sizes in suitable dispensing position when the dispenser writing platen is in operative position.
6. A forms dispenser for sales slips and the like comprising a base member, a writing platen movably connected thereto and positionable in an operative or an inoperative position in relation to said base member, a diaphragm movably connected within said base member, means for urging said diaphragm toward said writing platen, and an end closure hingedly connected to and forming part of said base member andto provide a guide for insertion of forms between said diaphragm and said base member when said end closure is open.

A sales slip holder and forms dispenser of the class described having a base member, a positionable writing platen movably connected to said base member and positionable to an operative osition from an inoperative position, a diaphragm movably connected within said forms dispenser-and having means thereon for gripping the form therewith, an end closure forming part of said base member and being hingedly connected thereto to provide a ramp for facilitating ingress of forms within said dispenser, and latch means for said end closure to maintain said end closure in fixed position when the writing platen is in its inoperative position. v

A holder of the class described comprising a base member, a diaphragm for supporting writing sheets carried by said base member, and a closure member, said closure member having a writing platen area and being pivotal about an axis disposed at the side of said diaphragm and being thus rotatable to expose said diaphragm and said closure member being reciprocally related to said diaphragm in a direction parallel to said axis, whereby in one reciprocated position it serves to shield said diaphragm and. in another reciprocated position it serves as a writing platen 9. A holder as set forth in claim 8, including a latch means for securing said closure member in either of said reciprocated positions.
10. A holder as set forth in claim 8, including means for rendering said closure member reciprocative and rotative with respect to said diaphragm, comprising a hinge element, said closure member being pivoted to said hinge element, and means in said base element retaining said hinge element in slidable relation therewith.
11. A holder for forms comprising a housing member for accommodating a pad of forms and a cover for said housing member, hinge means for hingedly relating said cover to said housing member at an edge thereof, said cover being slidably related to said housing member substantially in the direction of the pivotal axis of said hinge means and within predetermined limits whereby said cover may be reciprocated with respect to said housing member within said limits to partially expose the interior thereof and being rotatable with respect to said housing member to fully expose the interior thereof.
12. A holder for forms as set forth in claim 11, including a pad support diaphragm in said housing member and means for biasing said diaphragm toward said cover.
13. A holder for forms comprising a housing member for accommodating a pad of forms and a cover for said housing member, hinge means for said cover whereby said coveris rotatable with respect to said. housing member for full exposure of the interior thereof; said cover being slidably related to said housing member within predetermined limits for partially exposing the interior thereof; the direction of reciprocation of said cover being substantially in the direction of the pivotal axis of said hinge means.
