Be it known that I, DENNIS B. KEARNEY,

a citizen of the United States, residing at duction of a novel order or sales book by means of which a record in duplicate is made of an order or a sale, as the case may be, one copy being retained for future use and the other given to the purchaser or person giving an order. As an order-book it is particularly adapted for grocerylnen and others who take orders from house to house to be filled later, the person giving the order keeping one record, while the other and duplicate order is kept conveniently with other orders for future reference.

I have herein shown one practical embodiment of my invention, although the same may be varied or rearranged in various particulars without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Figure l is a perspective view of an order or sales book embodying one form of my invention in readiness for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, the carrier for the transfersheet being shown in inoperative position. Fig. 3 is a detail in plan view of the holding means for connecting the order-leaves with the main portion of the device; and Fig. 4 is a detail in side elevation of a portion of the order-book, showing the holding-prongs in open position.

I have herein shown my invention as comprising a flat stout support a of suitable size, preferably such as may be conveniently held in the hand and affording a pad or tablet for the leaves on of paper detachably connected therewith. In the present embodiment of my invention a bearing-sleeve a (see Fig. 3) is extended transversely of the support near one end and concealed therein and shorter than the width of the support, a rod I) being pivotally mounted in the bearing-sleeve and having attached to it preferably two holdingprongs b, which are bent or curved to extend from the under side of the support around at or near one edge of said leaves.

The free ends of the prongs may be sharpened, if desired, and they are passed through the series of superposed leaves m, Which rest upon the support These leaves may be suitably printed or divided to form order or sales blanks to be filled in as necessary.

In order to duplicate each inscription made upon a blank or leaf m, a transfer-sheet cl of suitable character is used, connected with the support in such manner that it can be inserted between two of the leaves, so that the writing upon the upper one will be transferred or duplicated on the under leaf.

I-have herein shown a convenient carrier for the transfer-sheet, consisting of a wire frame, the arms d being pivoted at d to the sides of the support between its ends, the sheet at being attached to the rod (i connecting the free ends of the arms. When the carrier is swung into operative position, Fig. 1, the transfer-sheet will be inserted between the uppermost and the second leaf of the series, and the former is filled in according to circumstances. The operator then lifts the original and swings it around and beneath the support, as at m for preservation, moves the transfer-sheet carrier into inoperative position, Fig. 2, and tears off the duplicate, giving it to the purchaser. Then by lifting the uppermost leaf, as m, Fig. 2, the carrier is swung back into position shown in ll ig. 1, and the device is ready for a new transaction.

The leaf m in Fig. 2 in intermediate position illustrates the manner in which the holding-prongs 1) guide it as it is turned under the support a, the straight portions b of the prongs permitting the originals to be piled up one upon another. Thus for each order given or sale made an original and duplicate are obtained and disputes as to details or items are avoided, while the customer has a duplicate record of the transaction.

Means are provided for locking the holding means in position, and herein for this purpose an extension 12 of the pivot-rod 12 projects to one side edge of the support and has pivotally connected with it at b a catch b adapted to clasp the side edge of the support. When it is desired to disengage the holdingprongs from their keepers, the catch 5 is moved into dotted-line position, Fig. 3, and the prongs can be swung back to either permit removal of the leaves wa or for the counectionof a fresh series m.

In order to protect the device as a whole when not in use, I have herein shown a folding cover consisting of two members 0 0, connected by a suitable flexible joint, as 0 the extremity of the part 0 of the cover being attached by any suitable joint, preferably a flexible flap or hinge 0 tothe lower endofthe support a, the hinge or connection 0 being secured to a foot a extended from the under side of the support and reaching transversely across the same from one to its other end. This foot a is made of such a depth, as herein shown, as will leave suiiicient space beneath the support a and the cover member 0 for the convenient storage of the original orders or sales-slips m as shown in Fig. 2, and the flexible connection 0 between the parts 0 O of the cover is long enough to permit the portion C to be turned over the holding means for the leaves and down upon the top of the superposed series of leavesm when the'device is not in use. My invention is not restricted to the variousdetails of construction nor the particular arrangement herein shown, as it is obvious the same may be modified or rearranged without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what, I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pate,nt, is-- 1. In a device of the described character, a support, a superposed series of leaves detachably connected atone edge ther-ewith, means to. connect the leaves and to, guide them to the under side of the support, a transfersheet' operatively connectedwith the support and adapted. to be, temporarily inserted between. the top andsecond leaves of the series, to record. upon the latter matter inscribed upon the top leaf, the top leaf being thereafter detached from the-support and the duplicate-or record leaf turned under it, and a cover connected to the under. side of the support at its; end. adjacentthefreeends of the leaves, a portion of the cover protecting the turned-under leaves between it and the under side of the support when the device is in use.

2. In a device of the described character, a support, a series of leaves adapted to be superposed thereon, connected curved holdingprongs pivotally mounted on the support, and

extending around an edge thereof from one to the other side, to pass through the leaves near one edge thereof, connecting them with the support and guiding them when turned from one to the other side of the latter, keepers on the support, for the free ends of the prongs, and a catch pivotally mounted on one end of the connection between the prongs and adapted to engage the adjacent edge of the support, and thereby lock saidprongs in.

3. In a device of the described character, a support, a superposed series of leaves detachably connected therewith at ornearoneend, a carrier pivotally mounted on; the side-edges of the support near the middle thereof and adapted to swing toward and away from the attached ends of the leaves, and a transfersheet attached to the free end of. the carrier, to be inserted between two of the-leaves when the carrier is in operative position.

4. In a device of the described character, a support, a series of leaves adapted to be superposed thereon, curved holding and guide means for the leaves,v pivotally mounted on;

the support at one end and extending aroundthe same from bottom to top, to detachably connect the leaves with the support and to guide them when turned thereunder,,a lock ing device for said means, located at one side of the series of leaves, a transfer-sheet, acarrier therefor attached; to the support between. its ends and adapted to carry the sheet between two leaves and to withdraw it therefrom, and a cover attached to the support near the free ends of the leaves and adapted.
