Description
April 2, 1940. J, c, JENSEN I 2,195,727
TOWEL CABINET Filed April 24, 1939 INVENTOR. Jens (/zrzafazn Jensen Patented Apr. 2 1940 UNITED STATE Y TOWEL CABlNET Jens Christian Jensen, Chicago, 111., assignor to Northern Paper Mills, Green Bay, Wis, a corporation of Wisconsin Application April 24, 1939, Serial No. 269,748
L 3 Claims.
The object of the invention is the provision,
of a guard normally covering and protecting the exposed end of the paper towel projecting through the slot which is normally held in closed posi- 'tion by spring means necessitating the use of one hand for holding it in open position while withdrawing the paper towel with the other hand,
. thereby involving a slight delay in the withdrawal of the towels from the cabinet and discouraging extravagant and wasteful use thereof.
In the accompanying drawing wherein an approved embodiment of the invention is illustrated:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the improved cabinet.
Fig.2 is aside elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary viewsimilar to Fig. 2 but showing the lower portion of the cabinet in section and the guard member in open position.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectionv on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 showing the hinged front part of the cabinet swung downwardly to open position to enable the introduction of a fresh supply of paper towels. v
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the cabinet showing the guardmember in open position.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the body of the towel cabinet is composed of two parts designated at 6 and 1. The part I constitutes the rear wall of a wall or other support 8 by suitable means 9. The vertical edges of the stationary part I are bent angularly as indicated at H! and the lower extremities of these flanges are extended down wardly and forwardly as at H and support pivot pins l2 which pass through the opposite side walls of the front part 6 and thereby pivotally connect the parts 85 and 1 together. 1
The front part 6 also includes the front wall l3 of the body and the top wall l4 thereof, the I latter being provided with a lock l5 adapted to coact with a keeper 16 at the top of the rear part 1 whereby the two parts of the cabinet body may be locked in operative position.
The lower portion of the rear part 1 .15 formed with a forwardly inclined extension I! and the front wall I3 is provided with a similarly arranged extension I8 and, when the parts of the cabi-. net are closed, a dispensing slot l9 is'thus provided between the extensions l1 and I8 to facilitate the withdrawal of towels for use.
A guard plate 20 is pivotally secured to the the cabinet and is rigidly secured to under side of the rear extension ll by hinges 2| and is normally held in raised position by the tension of a spring wire 22 arranged between the extension If and the guard plate 20. Both ends of the spring wire are bent angularly, one being secured by a strap 23 to the extension IT and the other being secured by a strap 24 to the inside of the guard plate 20. The medial portion of the spring wire is held against undue displacement by a strap 25.
Theguard plate 25 extends throughout the lengthof the slot l9 and is curved so as to closely fit beneath the oppositely inclined extensions l1 and H) to encloseand protect the projecting end 26 of the lowermost paper towel. Flanges 2? are formed at the ends of the guard plate to strengthen it and a handle 28 is struck therefrom for convenience of manipulation.
In use, the spring 22 normally holds the guard plate 28 in closed position as shown in Figs. 1
and 2 in which it covers the exposed projecting edge of the lowermost paper towel and also the slot E9. The tension of the spring I6 is such as to require the steady application of pressure by one hand of the user to retain it in open position while the other hand is used to withdraw the towel. This mode of operation discourages the extravagant and wasteful use of the towels as by withdrawing first one with one hand and then another with the other hand.
Upon release of the cover plate, it is swung to closed position by the spring 22 and retained un til further use.
What I claim is:
l. A towel cabinet comprising a body composed of two parts pivotally connected together and having a dispensing slot therein, a spring closed guard member normally covering said slot and pivotally secured to one of said body members, said guard being engageable by the other body member during swinging movement of the latter to cause displacement of said guard.
2. A towel cabinet comprising a body composed of two parts pivotally connected together and having a dispensing slot therein, a spring closed guard member normally covering said slot and pivotally secured to one of said body members, said guard being engageable by the other body member during swinging movement of the latter to cause displacement of said guard, and means for limiting the swinging movement of the second mentioned body member.
3; A towel cabinet comprising a body composed of two parts pivotally connected at their lower ends and including lower inclined extensions normally disposed in spaced relation to provide a slot for the withdrawalv of paper towels, stop -members on one part of said body adapted to cooperate with the extension of the other part 5 guard in closed position, said guard being engage- 1o able by the second mentioned body part and movable to open position during the opening movement of said second mentioned body part.
