PUMP-PIPE LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
Application filed February 19, 1917. Serial No. 149,578.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE l?. DAvIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at McIntosh, in the county of Torrance and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Pipe Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pipe lifter and more particularly to a clamp adapted vfor application to a pump pipe or the like, whereby the same may be conveniently removed from a well.
An object of this invention is to provide a clamp of the above mentioned type, which being composed of a few simple parts and easily assembled, shall form a durable and cheap article of manufacture.
Another object is to provide a clamp of such peculiar construction as to absolutely prevent any slipping or lost motion during the operation of raising the pipe.
The above and additional objects and the means by which they are accomplished will l be more readily apparent when taken in consideration with the attached drawing and accompanying specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention, illustrating the application of the same.
My invention as embodied in the drawings, comprises a pair of side rails 1 which are shown as of an oblong shape, but it is to be understood that in actual practice any desired shape or material may be used. The said rails 1 are connected in spaced relation by means of bolts 2 or other suitable fastening means, which as shown, extend through apertures formed in the rails adjacent theends thereof.
Pivotally mounted on the bolts 2 and adapted to be snugly received between the side rails 1, are a pair of pipe gripping members 3. The members 3 are pivoted at opposite ends of the rails 1, and adapted to swing inwardly so that upon reaching a, horizontal position the free ends of said members shall abut, and when in a horizontal position, they are adapted to lie in a plane below the plane of the upper surface of the said rails as clearly shown in Fig 3 The abutting edges of the gripping mem ers 3 are provided with semi-circular depressions as indicated at 4, and when joined, form a circular aperture, adapted to receive the pipe to be lifted.
Passing through the side rails, intermediate and below the bolts 2 are a pair of supporting members 5, which may consist of a pair of bolts, secured in position by means of nuts 6 engaged with the threaded ends of the bolts. These bolts 5 are adapted to receive and support the free ends of the members 3 when the latter are engaged under the nipple of a pipe, for the purpose of lifting the same, as is shown to advantage in Fig. 3.
To provide for attachment to the block and rope tackle usually employed for liftin operations of this sort, a pair of yokes are rovided, each having the ends thereof ooped as indicated at 8 for engagement with the bolt 2, externally of the side rails 1.
In operation, the clamp is slipped on the pipe section to be lifted, the members 3 swinging vertically, until the nipple on the end of the pipe is passed, then dropping to a horizontal position and adapted, during the hoisting operation to snugly engage the pipe beneath the coupling thereon, the supporting members 5 securely holding the clamping members against the downward pressure exerted thereagainst.
Having fully described my invention what I claim is:
A pipe lifter comprising a pair of spaced parallel side rails, a bolt passing through each of the op osite ends of the rails, a rec tangular bloc shaped gripping member pivotally mounted upon each bolt and adapt ed to swing vertically between said side rails, said gripping members having their free inner ends abutting only when the members are in a horizontal position and each being provided with a. transverse semi-circular cut out portion to surround a pi e, and bolts passing through the side ra1ls to be arranged beneath the free inner ends of said gripping members to form stops whereby the gripping members are normally held in the same horizontal plane with their free ends abutting.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
