Description
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE..
JOHN BURKHART, OF BROOKVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAPPLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,592, dated April 8, 1873; application filed February 8, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BURKHART, of Brookville, in the county of Franklin and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Grapple; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specilication, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved stone-grapple. Fig. 2 is an end view of the clevis and ring, the grapples being removed.
This invention relates to a new instrument for grappling and supporting heavy stones and other bodies during the building of houses, bridges, walls, einbankments, or other structures; and consists in the combination, Within a suitable clevis, of a pin or bar of adjustable grappling-hooks, so arranged that they can be conveniently shortened or elongated to suit the sizes of the bodies to which they are applied.
A in the drawing represents the clevis, open at the sides to admit the grappling-hooks U C. The hooks C have their slianks notched to form hooks, which may, respectively, engage and hang upon the horizontal pin b, which is held in the lower part of the clevis.
The hooks C can be conveniently moved in a longitudinal direction, and thus adjusted upon the pin b, so as to clasp larger or smaller stones. While the load is being elevated it can be turned to either side on the swivelpin B Without twisting the hoisting rope or chain.
The pin and the points of the hooks, which come in contact with the stone, are preferably made of steel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of two adjustable grapples, C, each having a row ot' hooks thereunder, with swiveled clevis A, having pin b, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN BURKHART.
