Description

May 6 1924.
J. D. ELLIOTT GRABHOOK Filed March 14, 1923 Patented May 6, 1924.
UNITED STATES JESS ID. ELLIOTT, F NAYLOR, MISSOURI.
eaannoox. I
Application filed March 14, 1923. Serial No. 624,999.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEss D. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naylor, in the county of Ripley and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grabhooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grapples and has for one of its prime objects to provide a 1 simple, inexpensive and effective grappling implement especially adapted for use in removing from wells and other deep places wooden or metal buckets and other articles which may have become accidentally disconnected from the usual hoisting rope and lost therein.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device for raising buckets from wells and other deep places whether with or without bale, and is connected of a dart formed from a single piece of metal which has arms pivoted thereto and adapted to be sunk into a well and withdrawn by means of a wire or rope.
These and like objects of the invention will be better understood as the description follows and as is specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and which clearly illustrate the construction and operation of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a side perspective view of my invention sunk into a bucket with the arms open.
Fig. 2 is an end view of same removed from the bucket, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the lower end of the supporting plate showing means for limiting the movement of the arms.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in detaiI like characters will be used to designate like arts in the different views.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a bar formed of a single sheet of metal and provided at its upper end with a rolled back portion 2 to provide a loop 3 for receiving therein a ring 4: to which is attached a wire or rope 5 for lowering the bar 1 into a well or other deep places. Arms 6 are pivoted on the opposite sides of the bar 1 adjacent the lower end of same and each of the arms 6 is mounted on a pintel 7. The free ends of each of the arms 6 is provided with a sharpened edge 8, which is also bevelled, so 65 that when the bar 1 is lowered into a well and the lower end of the bar enters a bucket caught therein, the bevelled edge permits the arms to also enter the bucket and upon placing strain upon the wire or rope 5 in order to lift the device from the well, the sharp end 7 engages the sides of the bucket thus lifting the bucket from the well along with the bar 1.
In order to prevent the arms 6 from swinging downwardly and assuming a position parallel with the bar 1, the lower end of the bar 1 is split and has its end bent at right angles to form shoulder or stops 9.
In view of the foregoing description of my invention in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that any further explanation as to the construction, operation and objects of my invention are unnecessary. 7
While I have shown and described the preferred forms of my grappling hook, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed, therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown, nor the combination and arrangement of parts.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: as
l. A device of the character described, comprising a'vertical supporting bar, means formed in one end of the bar for attaching a supporting line thereto, a pair of armsv pivotally mounted on oppositesides of the 90 vertical bar adjacent the lower end, said arms having sharp edges for engagement with the interior of a well bucket, and lugs bent out from the lower end of said vertical bar for engaging under said arms for limit- 96 ing downward movement of the same.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a vertical supporting bar, means formed in one end of the bar for attaching a supporting line thereto, a pair of arms [00 pivotally mounted on opposite sides of the vertical bar adjacent the lower end, said arms having sharp edges for engagement In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my with the interior of a well bucket, the lower end of said vertical bar being split and having its divided portions bent in opposite JESS D. ELLIOTT. 5 directions to form stops for engaging the Witnesses:
lower surface of said arms to limit down- 0. D. ELLIOTT,
ward movement of the same. M. VAN HYNING.
signature in the presence of two witnesses.
