COMBINED GRIP AND JACK.
Application filed August 16, 1923.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, LoYD C. POWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cushing, in the county of Payne and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Grip and J ack, of which the following is a specification.
This invention appertains to novel improvements in jacks and the primary object of the invention is to provide a novel device for facilitating the raising and lowering of pipes into wells and the like.
Another prime object of the invention is to provide a novel device, which is particularly adapted for lowering wall casings into wells, but which can be used as a lifting jack for vehicles and the like if desired.
A further prime obj ect of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character embodying a supporting frame, means carried by the frame for gripping the pipe, an operating lever carried by the frame and novel means carried by the lever for grippingthe pipe for raising or lowering the same step by step, the pipe gripping means carried by the frame permitting the holding of the pipe during movement of the lever to obtain a new grip on the pipe.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character, which will be durable and citiq cient in use, one that will be simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a small cost.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of-parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical section through the same.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the improved device.
Figure l is a horizontal section through the improved device taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5 5 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding p-arts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indi- Serial No. 657,799.
cates the improved device and B a pipe, on .which the same can be used. lVhile in the drawings I have particularly shown the same in use for lifting pipes it is to be understood that the same can be effectively used for lowering pipes and for other purposes.
The improved device A. comprises a. frame 1() including a pair of arms 11 and 12, which are integrally connected together at their, inner ends by a bight portion 13. then extend forwardly in parallel relation as at 14 for a short distance and are then bowed areuately as at 15 to provide means for extending about the pipe and well and then forwardly in parallel relation again as at 1G. This frame 1() is preferably held against movement in any preferred way at the top of the well hole. One of the straight portions 14C of the arms 11 and 12 has riveted thereto a forwardly extending strap 17, which terminates at its outer end in a hook 18 for engaging the pipe. The other straight portion of the other arm has secured thereto a strap 19, which terminates short of the bill of the hook 18. mounted upon a pin 2O intermediate the straps 17 and 18 is a dog 21 embodying spaced divergingly extending pipe engaging gripifiing teeth 22 and 2S. .lf so desired a The arms leaf spring 24 can be employed for normally throwing the dog 21 into engagement with the pipe, or the action of gravity solely' can be utilized for normally moving the teeth into pipe gripping position. Disposed between the straight portions 14 of the arms 11 and 12 ad]- acent to the connecting or bight portion 13 is a link 9.5. This link 25 supports a pivot bolt 27, which forms the fulcrum point of the operating lever 28. It can be seen that the lever is rockably mounted upon the pin 27 at a point intermediate its ends. The inner end of the lever 28 is of a yoke shape as indicated by the reference characters 29 for receiving the pin 27 and the upper end of the link therebetween and the extreme forward end of the yoke 29 carries a second pivot pin 30 on which is roc-kably mounted a U-shape-d frame 31, which is adapted to embrace the pipe to be raised. This frame 31 is preferably connected to the yoke end 29 of the lever 28 by means of a suitable spring 32, so as to normally hold the frame in substantial alignment with the lever. A, dog is also rockably mounted upon the bolt or pivot pin 3() and this dog 33 is of substantially the same shape as the dog 21 and embodies divergingly extending teeth 234i and 35. It so desired a chain 36 can be carried by the connecting portion 13 of the frame 1.0 and this chain can hook over the outer end ot' the lever 2S for normally holding the saine in a. predetermined position after the lever has been operated tor lifting the pipe.
In operation of the improved device, for lifting pipes, the jack is slipped over the pipe in such a manner that the Ueshaped frame 3l and the strap 17 will lie about the same. During the movement ot the device over the pipe B the dogs 2l and 33 are raised, so that the lower teeth 23 and 35 thereof will engage the pipe. `The frame l() is now rested `on the lower surface of the ground over the well hole or upon any other suitable support after which the outer end of the lever 28 is swung up, which will move the frame 31 downward over the pipe. Now upon downward movement of the outer end of the lever, the pipe will be raised due to the fact that the tooth 35 will be forced into engagement with the pipe. The raising movement of the pipe will be permitted by the upward swinging' movement ot the tooth 23. As soon as this lifting movement has been accomplished and the pipe B starts to slide back, the tooth 23 will be forced into firm contact therewith and thus hold the pipe against further movement. The lever is again operated to lift the pipe.
When it is desired to lowerthe pipe into the casing the position ot the tool is reversed and the lever is then lowermost. In this contingency the teeth 22 and 34; will then engage the pi pe. During the lowering movement of the pipe the lever 2S is operated in the same manner as heretofore described.
'From the foregoing description7 it can be seen that I have provided a novel device ot exceptionally simple and compact nature, which will effectively accomplish the purpose intended.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention.
lever tor embracing the device to be raised and lowered, and a double ended dog roclably carried by the lever for engaging the device to be raised and lowered. p 2. A jack comprising` a horizontally disposed base frame, means carried bly the fra-me Jfor encircling` the device vto be raised, a pivoted dog carried by said means for engaging the device to be raisedD a link secured to the frame, an operating lever pivotally supported by the'l link, means carried by .the inner end of the lever for encircling the device to be raised, and a pivoted dog carried by the lever for engaging said device. A jack comprising an open horizontally disposedbase frame, means carried by the base trame for releasably engaging the device to be raised or lowered, the device to be raised or lowered being adapted to extend through the open frame, a link pivotally secured to the trame adjacent to one end there- I of, an operating lever pivotally lsecured to the li-nlnat a .point intermediate its ends, means carried by the inner end of the lever for partiallyy encircling` the device to be raised or lowered, a. pivoted dog carried by the leveriior engaging the `device to be raised or lowered., andmeans carried by the trame for engaging the` lever to hold the same in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof l aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
