The primary object of my invention is to produce an implement of thecharacter described which is strong and durable, and consists of few parts, can be operated conveniently and expeditiously, This imple ment is more especially designed for use in a h'orizontal position for traction purposes, as when an automobile becomes stalled in a ditch, mud hole, or other place from which it cannot be propelled by its own power, or in a vertical position for raising a heavy object or objects, and holding the same suspended if desired.

The gearis now held by the pawl against the force of the load, and all is in readiness for a repetition of the drawing action of the jack. Such action is repeated as many times as may be necessary. During these operations the pin 54 is in its retracted position,

The trip 52 is now in the position represented by broken lines in Fig. 2. Next the handle is thrust downwardly, with the latch still in retracted position, until the trip contacts with the pin 5% and forces the same upwardly, and with it the pawl. The pawl is rocked upwardly far enough, by the aforesaidaction, to cause said pawl to clear the gear 36. This releases the parts and memhers holding the rod, and so releases the latter.

What I claim as my invention, to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination,

and desire in a 1ack of the class described, with a body provided with a spindle, and with attaching means for a chain or rope, a rack bar reciprocable in said body, and also provided with attaching means for a chain or'rope, said two attaching means being at relatively opposite ends of said body and bar, a gear mounted on said spindle and intermeshing with the teeth on said bar, and a pawl pivotally connected with said body. and adapted to engage said gear, said'pawl having a pin projecting therefrom, of a handle also mounted on said spindle, and equipped with a latch to engage rope,

but when it is desired to said gear, and further equipped with a trip to contact with said pin.

2. The combination, in a jack of the class described, with a body provided with a spindle, and with attaching means for a chain or a rack bar reciprocable in said body, and also provided with attaching means for a chain or rope, said two attaching means being at relatively opposite ends of said body and bar, a gear mounted on said spindle and intermeshing with the teeth on said bar, a pawl pivotally connected with said body to engage said gear, and a slip pin carried by said pawl, of a handle also mounted on said spindle, and equipped with a latch to engage said gear, and a trip mounted on said handle, and into the path of which said pin may be projected, said trip being adapted, when said pin is in the path thereof and the handle is rocked, to act on the pin and operate said pawl.

3. The combination, in a jack of the class described, with a body provided with a spindle, and with attaching means for a chain or rope, a rack bar reciprocable in said body, and also provided with attaching means for a chain or rope, said two attaching means being at relatively opposite ends of said body and bar, a gear mounted on said spindle and intermeshing with the teeth on said bar, a pawl pivotally connected with said body, and adapted to engage said gear, and a slip pin carried by said pawl, of a handle also mounted on said spindle, a springpressed latch carried by said handle toengage said gear, means also carried by the handle to retract said latch, and a trip mounted on said handle in position to con tact with said pin, when it is in the path thereof, and actuate said pawl out of enga'gement with said gear, through the medium of said pin, whensaid handle is rocked downwardly.
