Description

T. H. STEWART.
LABEL FOR BALE TIES. APPLICATION FILED APR. 5,1915.
I Patented Jan. 13, 1920.
THOMAS H. STEWART, 0 F ATLANTA, GEORGIA, ASSIGNGR T0 AMERICAN CAN GOMPANY, A
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
LABEL FOR BALE-TIES.
Application filed April 5, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, THO-MAS H. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing in Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Labels for Bale-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general tolabels and has more particular reference to tie labels of the type provided for the labeling of bales of cotton and other more or less bulky articles embraced by bands, wire or the like.
It is a principal object of this invention to provide a tie label which may be easily positioned and which after being positioned cannot be removed from the tie while the tie is .in place without destruction of the label.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a tie label so constructed and arranged that it will form a holder for papers, such as bills of lading, shipping in-- structions and the like through the provision of a relatively small and slightly expansible space between the tie and the label.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an effective and cheaply constructed label not likely to be damaged in the handling of the bale or other article about which the tie is secured.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
On the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bale of cotton provided with a tie to which the label embodying my invention is aflixed;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial view of a label and tie;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section thereof taken through the body of the label.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown it embodied in a label gen erally designated at A, secured upon a tie B which embraces a bale of cotton or other material C. The tie B, in the present instance, consists of a flat strap secured about the bale in any suitable fashion.
The label A is formed of a single sheet of metal having a fiat or substantially flat body or central part 4 and offset ends 5, the offset ends being in the present instance connected Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 19,177.
with the body by inclined intermediate portions 6. the label is preferably much greater than the width of the tie and perforations or apertures 7 are provided in each intermediate portion 6 through which recesses or apertures the tie extends as shown in the figures when the parts are assembled and in. use. The label carries suitable and desired indicating data 8 which may have any preferred character. a
Before the label is afliXed the inclined portions givesufficient ofiset of'the ends 5 back of the front or label plate 4 to allow of the tie being loosely and readily inserted as seen in Fig. 2; but as the tie is drawn tight the label as a whole is or may be flattened, by hand or by the plate of the bale press, so as to lie flat on the tie and not add appreciably to the thickness of the tie or form any The width of the sheet forming Patented Jan. 13, 1920.
projection. The inclined parts 6 cooperate in such flattening, bending and yielding readily and slightly extendingv the label longitudinally, while leaving and holding the front plate flat.
The label is thus so arranged upon the remove a label from the bale of cotton of one shipper and aflix it to a bale of cotton of a second shipper without leaving indications that would conclusively show such manipulation. The label carries no parts which can cut into the burlap or other bale covering, and also. carries no parts which can damage adjacent articles.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understoodfrom the foregoing description,'and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
A tie label of bendable sheet metal, comtoward the ends of the label, said inclined parts being perforated for the reception of a tie; and the passage for the tie from one perforation to the other being open and direct for the reception of a straight portion of a bale tie, the said label being bendable at the angles Where the said integral parts join the front plate and the off-set ends to thereby extend the label longitudinally and flatten the same under the baling pressure.
Signed in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
