To all wlw/m, t may concern Be it known that I, Bnn'r- ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bale Ties, of which the following is a specification. l
The present invention relates to improvements in bale ties, and has for its object to,
prov-ide a simple for-m of tie, which may be readily applied to packages, the improvements being particular-ly"applicable for use in maintaining pressed bales of cotton 1n. compressed condition.
Among the objects of the invention may be mentioned that of providing a tie which can be readily applied to a bale while inthe baling press and have the ends easily and securely yinterlocked.
A further object is to provide a form of lock' or connection between` the endsy of the tie, which will not be liable to become detached when the bale is handled after being removed; from the press.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of the em` bod-iment of the invention illustrated .in the' accompanying drawing.

In order to.l strengthen the end, interlocking, portions ot'- the tie, the body thereof is doubled upon itself at each. end as indicated at 1,'andthese double portions are firmly connected as by spot-welding or a suitable rivet 2.
In thebody of the tie adjacent one end are provided a plurality of elongated slots 3y and the other end of ythe tie is provided with a suitable Vhead adapted to be passed through eitherslot and eng-age with the walls thereof to prevent separation of the ends, the shape and manner y'of providing such head being more particularly hereinafter described.

The reinforced portion of the other end of the tie has a portion thereof at a point removed tromits end bent or rolled upon itself` transversely oithe length to provide a neck-.like portion 4, which will preferably be slightly tubular, and this tubular or rolled. necljr port-ion 4. is connected by a slightly curved section 5` with a lat terminal section 6,.` The rolled neck' portion lis ofk slightly lSSl diameter than the rectangular portion ot the slots 3. so. that it can be passed therethrough and the fiat termina-1 portion G, 21S shewn in Eigures 1,. t and 5i, is of the same Width es the body" of the tier.
As` no portion; ofthe fastening means for securing the ends of the tie together is ofv greater widtyh than the bodyof the tie, it will' that; the tie, may be` very quickly and. easily applied toa bale. Both ends can simultaneously passed through the grooves Z2y in the press plates l?, P" from one side of the press, as shown in Figure 2, and when the head 6 of one end has been passed through the proper aperture 3 in the other end of the tie, the two tie sections can be turned from the position shown at the right hand side into that shown at the left hand side of said figure when the two ends will be securely interlocked.
As shown in Figures l, 4f and 5, when the tie ends are thus interlocked about a bale there are no undesirable projections liable to catch on other articlesor to be struck in such manner as to effect disengagement of the fastening between the tie ends. rThe only projecting portion is the rounded or curved neck section 4f and all parts of the fastening are within the side lines of the body of the tie.
The expansive force exerted by the compressed material in the bale operates to draw the two ends from each other in the direction of the length of the adjacent end sections so that there is a firm and positive lock formed between the enlarged, flattened terminal portion 6 of the one end and the aperture engaged adjacent the other end of the tie.
It is believed that the operation and advantages of the tie will be readily appreciated from the foregoingl description.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A bale tie having each of its ends doubled back a short distance and secured to the body, one of the ends thus re-enforced being provided with a plurality of elongated slots, the other end being provided with a head integral with the tie and adapted to lock into one of the slots at the other end when placed around a b-ale.
2. A bale tie having each of its endsl dou# bled back a short distance and secured to the body, one ofthe ends thus rei-enforced being provided with a plurality of elongated slots, the other end being provided with a. short tubular section terminating in a flat portion and forming a T-shaped head adapted to pass through any of the slots in the tieadjaceirt the other end to secure the ends of the tie together as they are brought into overlapping relation.
3. A bale tie having its ends 11e-enforced .by being doubled back for a short distance and secured to the body and provided with fastening means formed integralk with the body, no portion of said fastening being wider than the tie, so that either or both ends are adaptedv to pass through slots in press' heads. y
a. A bale tie provided adjacent one end with a plurality of elongatedslots, the other end being shaped to provide a short, longitudinally extending, tubular section that terminates in a relatively flat transversely extending head that projects beyond the sides of the tubular section.
5. A bale tie provided adjacent one end with a plurality of elongated slots, the body of the tie adjacent its other end being bent upon itself to provide a relatively narrow neck that extends longitudinally of the tie and is slightly bowed or bent in the direction of its length, said neck portion terminating in a transversely extending flat head, for the purpose described.
6. A bale tie having its ends re-enforced by doubling for a short distance, one end being provided with a plurality of elongated slots, the other end having a short tubular section terminating in la flat portion forming a T-shaped head, no portion of which is wider than the body of the tie.
7. A bale tie having a plurality of elongated slots formedtherein near one end, the widest portion of each slot being toward the adjacent end, the tie adjacent the other end being bent upon itself transversely of its length to form a relatively narrow neck and terminating in a flattened portion of greater width than the slots.
8. A bale tie provided at one endk with a plurality of elongated slots, the other end having a short tubular section adjacent the end, which is flattened and forms a T- shaped head adapted to be passed through any of the slots.
9, A bale tie provided at one end with a plurality of slots and having at its other' end a flat terminal portion, the body of the tie adjacent said Hat terminalbeing rolled or bent upon itself transversely of its length to form a neck that constitutes a T-shaped head with the flat terminal, for'the purpose described. f
10. A bale tie having a plurality of openings at one end, the other end of -tlievtie being bent upon itself transversely of its! length at a point removed from its end, to forni a relatively narrow strengthened neck portion terminating in a head adapted to engage the openings at the other end of the tie.
11. A bale tie having a plurality of openings at one end, the other end of the tie being folded lengthwise and bent upon itself transversely of its length at a point removed from its end, to form a reinforced relatively narrow strengthened neclr portion terminating in a reinforced multi-ply head adapted to engage the openings at the other end of said tie.
