A TTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEicE.
JOSIAH I-I. EDWARDS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-FAS'QENER.
Application filed October 24, 1918.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Josiai-r l-l. EDWARDS, a citizen oic the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the 'following is a specilication.
My invention relates to a window locking device and more particularly to a concealed window locking` device.
An object of my invention is to provide a concealed sash locking device ior windows having concealed sash cords and pulleys.
Another object is to provide a concealed sash locking device for windows of the above described type which will wsecurely hold both upper and lower sashes in any desired position.
Vith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement or" parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a window, seen from the inside, with parts broken awa-y to disclose the sash chain, the pulley and the locking parts of the sash locking device embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a reduced view of the complete window shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary Sectional view taken on the line 4 4; oit Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 1, the window com-- prises an upper sash 10 and a lower sash 11 mounted between jambs 12 and 13 of a window frame, finished with an inner casing 14. The jambs 12 and 13 have pulleys 15 and 16 fixed in slots 17 formed approximately midway between their upper and lower ends. Sash chains 18 and 19 having weights 20 attached to their outer -ends are roved over the pulleys 15 and 16 and have their inner ends made fast to the sashes 10 i and 11. Sash chains 18 are attached tothe lower end of the lower sash stiles 21', and sash chains 19 are attached to the lower ends of the upper sash Stiles 24, so that the weight of the lower sash is in its upper joosition and the weight of the upper sash is in its lower position when the sashes are closed, as shown in Fig. 1. Grooves 21 are cut in the marginal edges of the upper and Specification of Letters Patent.

lower sash Stiles to provide clearance for the pulleys and chains. The Stiles of the lower sash have lugs 22 extending above the top rail to provide for locking the lower sash in its closed position.
Shallow holes 23 are bored into the sash stiles 2d and 24 on one side of the window, the boring being done from the outer edge of the sash toward the glass. These holes, which are continued into the lug 22 of the lower sash, form sockets adapted to receive a looking bolt or shank. A metal crossbar or cross plate 25 is fixed on the back face oi? the window jamb 13 directly above the sash pulleys 15 and 16 by screws driven into the jamb 13 through holes provided for them in the cross plate. Thumb-screws 27 and having elongated Shanks 29 adapted to register with the sockets 23, extend inwardly through tapped holes in the cross plate 25 and holes 13 in the jamb 13, so as to be in vertical alinement with sockets 23. The purpose of the thumb-screws is to engage with the sockets 23 in the sash Stiles, thus locking the sashes in any desired position. Thumbscrew 27 is adapted to engage with the 'casing and is adapted to swing into the weight well 33 when it is desired to get at the thumb-screws.
The operation is evident. The windowsashes are moved upwardly or downwardly in the usual way, the thumb-screws being turned backwardly far enough to clear the sockets. When it is desired to lock the window-sash in any position the hand is pressed against the lower end of the pivoted door 31, which readily yields, whereupon the hand is passed into the weight well and the thumb-screw is turned forwardly until its shank 29 enters one of the sockets 23, thus locking the sash against any upward or downward movement.
TWhile I have shown my sash locking` device, as now known to me, it will be understood that various changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit ot' my inven-V tion as claimed.
I claim: i
A sash fastener comprising a Window oasing having a Well at the side of the Window opening intei'inecliate o1C the top and bottom and a jamb forming the inner side oliv the Well, an upper and loWel1 sash mounted to slide vertically Within the window casing 10 against the jamb, said upper and lowvei1 sashes having sockets formed in the nim'- ginal edges of adjacent Stiles, a cross plate fixed to the back face of the jainh and having tapped holes, thumb-screws mount-ed in the holes and having elongated Shanks to engage in the sockets, and a door opening into said Well to pi-Ovide access to the screws.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specication.
JOSIAH H. EDWARDS.
