WITNESSES A TTOHlI/EYS ALVA K. DAWSON, 0F JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
COMBINED HEAD-COVERING- AI TD HAIR-COMB.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1920.
Application filed December so, 1918. Serial No. 268,843.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that IMALVA K. DAWSON, a citizen of the United'States, and a resident of Jacksonville, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented a new and Improved Combined Head-Covering and Hair-Comb, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. This invention relates to head coverings and has particular reference to a means for carrying in a peculiarly neat and incons icu-. ous manner within or as a part of the ead covering, a comb adapted to be used for combing up the hair .of the wearer of the head covering.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a combined head covering and comb so constructed and arranged that the wearer of the head covering may comb. up his hair coincidentally with the removal of the head covering from his head, and hence without rendering himself conspicuous in so doing.
More specifically stated the invention has for its primary object the provision of a cap such as is commonly worn byv young men while cycling, golfing, or motoring, and which when worn ordinarily results in 'disheveling or matting down the hair com monly worn pompadour, the cap having its vizor of the usual crescent form and so constructed as tocarry in it in concealed position a similarly shaped comb the teeth of which may be projected rearward or inward toward the center of the cap by simple movement of the wearers thumb while grasping the vizor to remove his cap, and so by an upward and rearward movement of the vizor of the cap with the comb teeth projected as indicated hemay readily comb up' his hair into proper and neat position and with an ordinary or natural movement of the cap. After theuse of the comb is thus made it by reverse movement of the thumb will be again retracted into the pocket within the vizor of the cap. z
A still further'object is to provide a comb and a holder therefor, the holder having a pocket in .whichthe comb is carried permanently and from which pocket the teeth of the comb may be projected for combing the hair while the back or rib of the comb is maintained in permanent engagement with the holder.
I Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a cap indicating its ordinary position on the; head, and with the comb in its nested posltionl Fig. 2 is a similar view indicating the cap in the act of removal from the head and with the comb projected for straightening or lifting the hair; and
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the vizor detached, with the comb in the position of Fig. 1, and with a portion broken away to show part of the comb in full lines.
Referring now more specifically to the illustrations I show a head covering in the form of a cap having a loose soft crown 10 adapted naturally to rest upon the wearers head and mat down his hair, and a vizor 11 which ordinarily is of relatively stifi' imaterial. I amnot particularly concerned with the construction of the cap with reference to the crown, the'improvement residing especially in the provision of means to hold a comb.- I do indicate, however, a sweat band 12, which may have some bearing upon the pocket formed for the comb, and in some instances may assistin retaining the comb in. its normal hidden position.
As above indicated the vizor is provided with a pocket or receptacle 13, the rear or inner edge of which is in open communication with that portion of the cap constituting the union between the vizor and the crown andadjacent to which the aforesaid sweat band is located. Except for the open edge or. slot just referred to at the inner edge of the pocket the vizor is soconstructed that the pocket is invisible under all circumstances. .At the lower surface of the vizor is provided a longitudinal slot 14:, that is to say leading endwise toward the wearers forehead.
The comb comprises a back 15 and a series of teeth 16, the comb being so fashioned as to substantially fill the pocket 13 while in normal position. The finger piece 17 in the nature of a stud extends upward throu h the slot 14 and is fixed in the back .of t e comb firmly, while the points of the teeth lie normally just within the mouth of the pocket. It is obvious that when the wearer grasps the vizor of his cap in the usualmanner, his thumb grasping the lower surface thereof, he by simply lacing his thumb upon or against the stud 1 may by forcing the stud upward or inward toward his fore-.
usual use of a comb and which he may effect by simply passing the comb upward and rearward through his hair with a natural removal movement of the cap. The comb may then be returned to its normal hidden position within the vizor by simply drawing outward on the stud or finger piece,
which movement also may be effected'without attracting any attention on the part of any other person than the wearer of the cap.
The several parts may be of any suitable materials. For example the vizor may be still and the comb may be made of metal, celluloid, or any other material that may have suflicient rigidity for its intended use. Moreover the vizor itself might be more flexible than usual and the comb if made of rigid material might serve as a stiffener for the vizor whereby its form will be maintained substantially the same as any other cap.
I claim:
1. The combination of a cap having a" sweat band and a vizor whose inner edge is arranged adjacent to-the lower edge of.
the sweat band, said vizor having a pocket formed therein with an open mouth adjacent to the sweat band, -and a comb carried permanently in the pocket with the points of the teeth adjacent to said pocket mouth and over which the sweat band lies.
2. The combination of a cap having a vizor with-a pocket therein, a comb carried permanently in the pocket and having its' teeth curved to conform to the shape of 85 while the wearer is lifting his cap, substan- 40 tially as set forth.
3. The combination of a crescent shaped portion of a head covering, providedwith a 1 pocket, a similarly shaped hair comb carried permanently by and hidden normally in said pocket, a sweat band fastened to said head covering and arranged to cover the opening of said pocket and hide the teeth ofsaid comb when it is in said pocket, means to project the teeth of the comb out of and 60 beyond the pocket, and auxiliary means so positioned as to insure the holding of the comb in its normal position.
4. The herein described cap comprising a crown, a vizor and a sweat band adjacent to the joint between the vizor and the crown, said vizor having a pocket with an opening adjacent to its rear edge and overwhich the sweat band projects, a comb carried permanently in said pocket, and means fixed to the comb whereby it may be adjusted to project they teeth thereof beyond the pocket and sweat band and: subsequently returned to its normal nested position.
