LoCK-MONTINC rLATE. Y
Original application led May To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL F. ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Aurora, Kane county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Lock-Mounting Plates, of 'which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for mounting locks in drawers, cabinets and the like, and has special applicability for use with metal structures where the assembly andadjustment of the lock and disassembly for repair would, without my device, be 'a matter of some diiiiculty. j
Among the objects of my invention is the provision of a lock mounting structure that will afford ,facilities for adjustment and will permit the positioning of the key-barrel of a cabinet-lock so that it will not project beyond the vertical plane of the front wall ofthe drawer. Another object is .the provi.- sion of a structure of this kind that will securely mount the lock so that it will not work loose or become displaced. Among the further Obj ects of my invention are economy of manufacture, saving of space, vease and convenience of installation7 and dependability in operation.
The above and kother objects I prefer to accomplish through the instrumentalities heretofore described and as more speciically pointed out in the claims. I willlnow refer to the accompanying drawings that form a part of this specification, wherein,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a fragmentary `portion of a metal drawer structure with my invention incorporated thereon.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the inside front wall of the drawer, with my lockmounting plate secured thereto.
Fig. 8 is a horizontal section taken on line 3,-3, of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows, with a cabinet-lock installed.
In the drawings I have employed similar reference characters to designate the same parts throughout the divers views. The subject-matter of this application is a division of a co-pending application for Letters Patent of the United States iled by me May 31, 1918, bearing Serial Number 287,590, for improvements Vin drawer construction, wherein the drawer is supported in guides in a suitable supporting plate 10, secured to Specication of Lettersatent.

the underside of a work-bench or table. A stop or jamb-plate `11, of suitable shape, is Vsecured to the plate 10 Vand has a downf wardly .projecting member 12, that Vdepends therefrom a slight distance back of the front ,r forward edge ofthe plate 10, where it may be engaged by the lateral member of an L-shaped flange V13) formed along thetop edge of the front plate 141 of the drawer. If desired, I may employ a structure lfor this purpose that is' vsimilar to the jamb-plate disclosed inmy aforesaid co-.pending application, which is set forth and claimed in another application for Letters Patent of the United States Aexecuted by me even date herewith, for improvement in jambp'lates, 'While my lock-mounting plate is desirable in connection with they specific formof metal drawer herein illustrated, -it will be readily perceived that the lockmounting plate may also be employed to advantage with otherv and different constructions of metal drawers and vwith drawers constructed of materials other than metal, and, in fact, c,an be used to advantage for the mounting-,of locks in all structures in which 4locks are desired to be mounted. v
It a convenient location, the ,front plate 14: is provided with an aperture 1K5, j ire'ferably circular in shape, that is surrounded upon the inside of -the plate by, a tubular member or stub 16, which'may beformed jby Stamping out en .embessmnt inthe metal of which the front plate is made, as shown in the drawings.
It is desirable in structures of this kind to position the key-barrel 17, of the lock 18, either flush with or slightly back of the vertical plane of the front plate 14, so that there will be no projections along the same. In order to do this, I employ the lockmounting member illustrated in the drawings that preferably comprises a substantially rectangular shaped base 19, that is riveted, welded or otherwise suitably secured to the rear surface of the front drawer plate 14, and has a centrally disposedaperture 20, that surrounds the tubular embossment 16. This base 19 has oppositely disposed lateral wings or extensions 21, 21, that project horizontally from thev vertical sides thereof, that are offset or raised away from the plate 19 a slight distance, as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, and are provided with open-ended slots 22, 22, to receive the bolts 23, 23, or the like, for securing the body of the lock to said mounting-plate. The cabinet-lock` I employ preferably has op positely arranged lateral ears 24, 24, that are apertured to receive the bolts 23, or
other securing means, that pass throu h theV apertures and through the slots 22 1n the wings 2l of the mounting plate. This will position the lock so that its retractable element '25 will be projected back of the lateral member 12 of the jamb-plate to lock the drawer when the latter is closed, and the slots 22 will permit of the adjustment of the lock to take care of any slight inaccuracies of construction or stamping.
While I have illustrated and described specific meansI for carrying out my invention, I desire it understood that changes or refinements are possible without materially departing from the principles involved, and
all such modifications of the structure are contemplated in the scope of the appended claims. Y
What I claim is l. In a structure of the kind described, a wall provided with a lock opening, a lock, and means for mounting said lock consisting of -a plate surrounding said lock opening and provided with offset portions that are disposed in opposite directions and to which the lock is removably secured.
2. In a structure of the kind described a wall provided with an inwardly embossed opening, a lock having its key-barrel positioned in said opening, and a mounting plate having a lcentral opening also fitting said lock barrel and provided with offset inem-l bersto which the lock is attached.
3. Means for mounting locks in drawers comprising a plate fitted to the front wall of a drawer the body portion of said plate being of substantially rectangular shape and provided with a central aperture for the Vtion and provided with open-ended slots t0 receive elements to secure the lock to said plate.
4. In a structure of the kind describedv a wall provided with a suitable opening, a tubular member surrounding said opening and extending inwardly from said wall, a lock having a key-barrel positioned in said tubular member, and a lock mounting plate provided with a central-opening fitted on said tubular memberl and said plate provided with off'set extensions to which the body of the lock is secured.
5. A fitting for a drawer comprising a base adapted to be secured to the front wall of a drawer, said base havingl offset apertured extensions projecting in opposite directions and are adapted for adjustably receiving and securing a lock.
'6. A structure of the kind described including an apertured front plate, in combination with a fitting comprising a perforated base arranged in registry with the aperture in said plate, and offset slotted extensions projecting in opposite directions on said base for adj ustably receiving and securing a lock. 7. A wall having an inwardly projecting tubular embossment, in combination with a fitting comprising a perforated base surrounding said embossment and provided with offset slotted extensions projecting in opposite directions and to which a lock is adjustably secured.
Signed at Aurora, county of Kane and State of Illinois, this 27th day of March, 1919.
AXEL F. ERICKSON.
