Xfir W ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 18, 1931 UNrraa STATES RAYMOND H. MARTIN, OF BRIDGEPOBT,
CONNECTICUT, AssIsNoa'ro THE. BASSICK COMPANY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUE A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT DRAWER I'ULL Application filed February 16, 1929. Serial No. 340,517.
The present invention relates to improvements in drawer pulls,-and has for an object to provide a sheet metal pull, of simple and economical construction, which will be attractive in appearance, and reliable in use.
Another object is to provide a pull comprising a backing plate including a decorated portion and .an undecorated portion,
' and a decorated panel or medallion plate adapted to be secured to the undecorated portion of the backing plate, so that various designs of backing and panel plates may be combined to produce a variety of combination designs, without the necessity and expense of making separate dies for each combination design. Another object is to provide such a pull in which the flanged attaching post is secured in an aperture in the undecorated portion of the backing plate, and is adapted to be covered and concealed at the front by the panel plate.
A further object is to provide a pull in which the handle or bail supporting means is formed as a part of the decorated exposed portion of the backing plate, thus providing an unobstructed undecorated portion for attachment of the decorated panel plate, the decoration of which may be of any desired shape or form, without the necessity of conforming to or being in circular relation about the attaching post.
With the above and other objects in View. an embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a drawer pull, according to the present embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof, and showing the same secured to a drawer.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the backing plate employed.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 6 is a front view of the attaching post employed.
Fig. 7 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 8 isa front elevation ofthe panel or medallion plate employed. 7
Fig. 9 is a vertical sectional view thereof, and
vFig.10 is a side elevation of the same.
' Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
.' Referring to the drawings, the drawerpull, according to the present embodiment of the invention comprises a sheet metal backing plate including a central undecorated panel portion 10, and a decorated marginal portion 11, having a flange 12 at its outer edge and a raised bead 13 at its inner edge, which outlines the panel portion 10. The decoration upon the portion 11 is formed by embossing in suitable dies and serves with the flange 12 and the bead 13 to provide a rigid non-bending structure. Pressed up socket forming bosses 14 are formed in the marginal decorated portion at each end of the plate, and have the ends of the handle or bail 15 pivotally engaged therein. Y
A circular recessed portion 16 is formed centrally of the panel portion, and within this is provided a central aperture 17. A tubular interiorly threaded post 18, having a flange 19, is inserted through the aperture 17, its flange being engaged in the recess 16 and secured by lugs 20 struck from the portion- 16 and engaged in slots 21 in the flange. Prongs 22 formed upon the flange are projected through slots 23 in the recessed portion 16 and are adapted to be pressed into the furniture to prevent turning of the pull. The pull is adapted to be secured to the furniture by a screw 24 engaged in the threaded post, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. The recess 16 is of such depth that the flange 19 and the bent over securing lugs 20 do not project above the surface of the undecorated panel portion 10.
The decorated panel or medallion plate 25 corresponds in shape to the undecorated panel portion 10 of the backing plate, and is provided at its ends with lugs 26. which are adapted to be inserted through. slots 27 formed in the portion 10, and bent upon the rear surface of said portion 10 to thereby secure said panel plate to the backing plate. The assembled plates present a solid completely decorated unit in which the. attaching 5 post is effectively concealed. The plate 25 may be decorated in any suitable manner, as by embossing, as; shown, enginez turning, painted designs, decalcomania, etc. I have illustrated and described, a preferred. and: satisfactory embodiment: 0f.-*:.the2*- inventiombut itwillbe obvious thatchanges: may be made therein, Within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appendedri' claim.
5 Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent 1Sjt In a pull, a backingplateincluding a;panels. portion and .a marginalg portion, said marginal portion including a raised portion defining said panel. portion, attaching means secured .to said backingflplatekand. projected reanWardly therefrom, and a panellplate corresponding in shape to and securedfinsaid;
