Description
March 21, 1939. A BIRDSALL 2,151,182
HANDLE FOR FURNITURE AND THE LIKE Filed Jan. 29. 1938 ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 21, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFECE Albert L. Birdsall, Grand Rapids, Mich., assignor to Keeler Brass Company, Grand Rapids,
Mich.
Application January 29, 1938, Serial No. 187,582
3 Claims.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a handle or drawer pull or the. like which is suitable for office furniture such as drawer pulls and other articles of furniture which is neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable and very economically produced.
A further advantage is that my invention may be readily embodied in handles very considerably varied in shape or design.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a handle or drawer pull embodying my invention partially sectioned and broken away to show structural details.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary rear view.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through one of the base members.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated is designed as a drawer pull for filing cabinets. It comprises a grip portion I which is formed of a piece of brass tubing bent into a bail-shape to provide parallel ends 2, the bight or cross portion 3 being preferably flattened in cross section, the purpose of this being to provide a grasping of substantial width and of flattened cross section and also to increase the attractiveness and give the impression of massiveness. The end portions are left cylindrical and are internally threaded at 4.
I provide rearwardly flaring base portions 5 having neck portions 6 of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the ends of the grip portions and in abutting relation thereto. These parts are secured together and attaching studs provided by the attaching stud members 1 which have. inner threaded portions 8 threaded into the ends of the grip portions and outer stud portions. 9 which are adapted to be inserted through holes in the drawer or other object to which the handle is attached and to receive suitable nuts not illustrated. These studs are provided with annular collar-like shoulders l which engage interiorly within the base portions and clamp their ends against the ends of the. grip portions. The parts are drawn tightly together so that the seam or joint between the base portions and the grip portion ends are not easily discernible and the grip has the appearance of having flared ends. These ends are in eiiect escutcheon members that fit against the outer side of the drawer to which the handle or pull is attached.
The structure is very economical and can be made in a wide variety of sizes and a considerable variation in design at a relatively slight cost. It will be appreciated that the base members 5 being formed of stampings can be easily varied in size and shape to correspond to other hardware or furniture on which the handle is to be used.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a very practical embodiment thereof. I have not attempted to illustrate the variations in design as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A handle for furniture and the like comprising a bail-shaped tubular grip portion having ends disposed in parallel relation and internally threaded, flaring base portions of sheet metal having smooth interior surfaces and neck portions of a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the ends of the grip portion and in abutting relation thereto, and threaded attaching studs extending through said base portions and threaded into the ends of said grip portion, said attaching studs having integral annular ribs interiorly engaging the smooth interior surfaces of said base portions and clamping their ends against the ends of said grip portion, the outer ends of said studs projecting from the outer ends of said base portions.
2. A handle for furniture and the like comprising a tubular grip portion, base portions of sheet metal having smooth interior surfaces and inner ends abutting the ends of said grip portion, and threaded attaching studs extending through said base portions and threaded into the ends of said grip portion, said attaching studs having integral shoulders interiorly engaging the smooth interior surfaces of said base portions and clamping their ends against the ends of said grip portion, the outer ends of said studs projecting from the outer ends of said base portions.
3. A handle for furniture and the like comprising a tubular grip portion having threaded ends, base portions having unthreaded inner surfaces and abutting the ends of said grip portion, and threaded attaching studs threaded into the ends of said grip portion and having integral shoulders engaging the inner surfaces of said base portions and clamping the base portions against the ends of said grip portion.
ALBERT L. BIRDSALL.
