Be it known that I, FnLiKs BARNIAK, a citizen of Poland, residing at Rosemont, in the county of Taylor and State of `West Vil ginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail- Chairs of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention resides in the provision of a metallic tie and rail chair wherein the rail is supported upon a solid block arranged within a hollow metallic tie and secured in position on the block bv fastening devices passing through retaining plates overlying the base flanges of the rail, the fastening devices also passing through supporting members for the rail blocks arranged inwardly of the tie.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a metallic tie and rail chair constructed in accordance with the present invention, the central port-ion of the tie being broken away,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l showing the fastening bolts passing through the arched supporting blocks within the tie and Fig. il is an inverted perspective view of one of the rail supporting blocks removed from the tie.
"Referring more in detail to the construction of the metallic tie and chair, there is illustrated a rail tie substantially U-shaped in cross section embodying a base 5 and side walls 6, the same being opened at opposite ends and also at its upper side as indicated in Figs. l and 3. A pair of spaced transverse supports 7 are arranged adjacent each end of the tie and have curved lower faces 8 for absorbing the supporting strains upon the upper face of said supports, the lower sides of the supports terminating adjacent the lower edges of the side walls 6 as illustrated in Figs. l and 3.
A rail supporting chair block embodying a rectangular plate portion 9 carries a depending rectangular bloclr l() that is adapted to .seat upon the base or bottom 5 of the tie while the side edges of the plate 9 rest upon the transverse supports 7 while the opposite edges extend within the sides 6 of the tie as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Rails ll are supported on the chair 9 and are retained in position by base iange engaging plates l2 positioned adjacent the ends of the ties with portions 12 extending beyond the rail flanges and resting upon the upper faces of the chair 9. Clamping plates 13 are positioned at the ends of the ties and have portions 13 overlying the portions 12 and retained in position by bolts 14: passing therethrough, and through openings 9 in the rail chair 9 and transverse supports 7. A central plate l5 having 4rail flange engaging portions 16 at opposite ends thereof is supported midway of the tie and is retained in position by bolts le passing therethrough a-nd through the rail chair 9 and transverse supports 7. From this detail description of the device, it is thought that the construction and operation thereoflwill at once be apparent, it being understood that in assembling tlie different elements described, the rail chair 9 is lowered into the tie with the edges thereof resting on the transverse supports 7 whilethe central block l0 is supported on the base of the tie after which the rails ll are positioned upon the chairs 9 and the retaining clamps l2 and 16 mounted upon the base flanges of the ties and retained in position by the bolts 14. It is to be understood that slight changes in the details of construction are contemplated as will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is A device of the class described comprising a metallic tie U-shaped in cross section, transverse supports arranged adjacent each end of the tie and spaced from the upper edges thereof, rail chairs comprisinga central block resting on the base wall of the tie and having fianges seated on said transverse supports, rails mounted upon said chairs, clamping members engaging the base flanges of said rails and bolts passing through said clampingplates, chair flanges and transverse supports.
