STEEL RAIL-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLPH R. De From, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Steel Rail-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway tles and particularly to the class of metal or steel ties.
The object of the invention is to provide a metal tie of tubular form in order to cheapen and lighten the constructlon and to provide filler blocks therein ad acent each end thereof, under the rails to support the weight of these rails, the method of holding these blocks in position also providlng means for securing the rail holding means to the tie.
A further object is to provide a metal tie constructed of opposed channel members having their open faces opposed, to define atubular tie, the means for securing the channel members together also holding in position the above mentioned filler blocks and the rail holding means, so as to provide economy of construction and to lessen the labor involved in assembling the tie and positioning the rails thereon.
WVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the following novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tie embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one end thereof;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of one of the channel members.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the tie comprises a tubular member indicated generally by the reference character 10. This member comprises a pair of channel members 11, which have their open faces opposed to form a tubular tie open throughout its length. Secured within the tie adjacent each end thereof, so as to be positioned beneath the rails, are filler blocks 12, preferably formed of metal for the purpose of stilfening or reinforcing the tie at this point. The members 11 and the filler block 12 are provided with alined openings 13 and 14: respectively, through which are adapted to pass bolts 15, for the purpose of securing the said filler blocks within the tie and securing the members 11 together in tubular formation. The filler block 12 is formed upon its lower face with a groove 15, to provide a vent therethrough for the purpose of drainage.
Seated upon the upper face of the tie above the blocks12 and preferably co-eX- tensive therewith are channel rail plates 16, in which the rails 17 are adapted to be placed. These plates 16 are also formed with openings 17, which are adapted to aline with the openings 13 and 141 to receive the bolts 15. Secured upon the bolts 15 by means of nuts 18 are inner clamping members 19, which are formed along the inner edge with a recess 20 for the purpose of receiving one side of the base flange of the rail 17. Located upon the opposite end of the plate 16 and secured upon the bolts 15 by means of nuts 21, are outer clamping members 22, which are formed with a recess 23, to receive the opposite side of the base flange of the rail 17 and are further formed with a guard flange 24, which is adapted to fitwithin the fishing space of the rail and to contact with the under inclined surface of the head thereof.
As this guard flange 24 is located upon the outside of the rails, it acts to prevent any tendency of the rails to spread and to further guard against this tendency, the plate 16 is formed along each edge thereof with flanges 25, so that it provides in efiect a channel plate for receiving the rails begween the inner and outer clamping memers.
It is thought that from the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings persons skilled in the art will be able to readily understand the construction and numerous advantages of the invention, and that a more detailed description is unnecessary. The right is reserved to make such minor changes in the form and proportion of the invention as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A metal rail tie comprising a pair of channel members having their flanged faces opposed to define a tubular member open throughout its length, filler blocks disposed Within said member adjacent each end thereof, bolts adapted to pass through openings in said filler blocks and said member to hold the parts associated and rail securing de vices engageable with said bolts.
2. A metal rail tie comprising a pair of channel members having their open faces opposed to define a tubular member open throughout its length, filler blocks disposed Within said member at each end thereof and having grooves therein to provide drainage vents, bolts adapted to pass through openings in said filler blocks and said member to hold the parts associated and rail securing devices engageable With said bolts.
