OLIVER P. WILLIAM-S, OF YOUNGSTOWN FLORIDA, ASSIGN OR 0F ONE-THIRD TO ARTHUR C. WILLIAMS, 0F MURDOCK, FLORIDA.
RAILWAY-RAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1917.
Application filed February 20, 1917. Serial N 0. 149,849.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIvER P. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Bay and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rails, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in the construction of railways rails.
In carrying out my invention it is my purtween the tread portion of the rails will be broken with respect to the joints of the base or supporting portions of the said rails and also wherein. the said base or supporting portions comprise substantially similar but independent members arranged upon the opposite sides of the web of the tread portion of the ends of the said base or supporting members will not be disposed opposite each other, so that the staggered joints between the supporting and the tread portions of the rail tends to produce a substantially continuous rail.
With the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
' Figure l is a side elevation of a compound rail constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the same taken upon a greatly enlarged scale,
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view upon an enlarged scale and approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the tread member of the rail, an
Fig. 5 is a similar perspective view of one of the base or tread supporting members.
The rail is broadly indicated by the character R and the supporting ties by the characters T.
The rail includes tread members all of a similar construction, each comprising a head 1 and a centrally arranged depending web 2. The web at the lower edge thereof is formed with outwardly extending angularly disposed ribs 3-3 so that the said lower edge of the web is substantially V-shaped in cross section. a
l of the tread of the rail upon its underface and in a line with the sides of the web 2 is formed with continuous V- shaped channels H, and the web between the ribs 3 and the underface of the ball or head of the rail vals with transverse bolt openings. The base or straight plate or side member 5, the upper edge of which being beveled, as at 6, whereby to be received in the channels 4111 the underface of the head or ball of the tread portion of the rail. The plates or side members 5 are provided with openings 7 that are designed to register with the openings in the web of the tread and the said plates 5 below the said openings are formed each with an outwardly extending flange '8, the inner surface of which corresponding to the outer angular surface of the ribs 3 upon the web 2 of the tread. The
whereby to receive spikes 9 that enter the formed with the flanges 9 are inwardly extending flanges 10, the same be ing formed with a continuous upwardly projecting rib 11, the outer edge of the said flange being vertically straight and the angular inner face of the said ribs 11 being designed to engage with the angular surfaces of the ribs 3 upon the web 2 of the tread. The straight inner edges of the base 10 upon the side members i may contact, and when the securing elements are passed through the alining openings in the plates 5 and in the web 2 of the tread the nuts screwed upon the said bolts, the sections comprising the rails may be readily associated in a firm and substantial manner whereby the tread surface is eifectively supported upon the base members of the rail. It will be apparent by reference to the drawings and from the above description that the meeting ends of the side members of the support may be disthat the meeting ends of the supports on one of the sides of the ra ls may be disposed away from the meeting ends of the supports upon the opposite s des of the rails.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
In a compound rail, a tread includinga head and a w b centrally depending from thehead, said web upon, its lower-edge have 7 ing outwardly extending angularly disposed ribs, the head of the tread upon its under: face being grooved longitudinally in a line with the sides of the web, a support for the tread comprising plates adaptedto engage with the sides of the web and to have their upper edges receives in the underface of the Copies of this patent may .be obtained for fiveeents ,eac
head of the tread, said plates having their 15 lower portions flanged outwardly to engage with the outer surfaces of the ribs upon the web, said plates having their lower edges provided with inturned members that have\ their inner edges formed with upwardly ex-\20 tending ribs that are adapted to engage with s the underfaces of the ribs of the web and to contact; with each; other, and means comprising transverse members passing through the side membersiandwebs toreonneoting the said sides. to the Webs of the, rails.
In testimony. whereof .1 ailix my signature.
OLIVER WILLIAMS.
