EZEKIEL W'HEELER, OF KINGFISHER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
METAL RAILWAY-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 764,089, dated July 5, 1904.
Application filed April 25, 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LEZEKIEL VVI-inELEma citizen ot' the United States, residing at Kingfisher, in the county of Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Railway-Ties; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved metallic railway-tie; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved tie of the class designated which embodies in its construction a pair of removable oppositely inclined plates which are adapted to be moved longitudinally and are provided with means for engaging the opposite sides of the base-flanges of the rails to secure the latter firmly to the tie and prevent the rails from spreading.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is partly a side elevation and partly a longitudinal sectional view of arailway-tie embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 2.
My improved tie comprises a base-plate 1 and a pair of rail-supporting lock-plates 2. The base-plate is provided at a suitable distance from its ends and midway, or substantially so, between its sides with standards 3, which rise therefrom and are provided with oppositely-inclined sides 1, which are at a suitable angle with reference to the baseplate. At the sides of the latter on its upper side are stop flanges or shoulders 5, the inner sides of which are inclined to correspond with the inclined sides 4 of the standards and are provided with longitudinal grooves 6.
The rail-supporting lock-plates 2 are adapted to bear against the inclined sides of the standards 3 and to be thereby maintained in oppositely-inclined positions and to also engage the inclined inner sides of the stop-shoulders or flanges 5 and are provided on their outer sides with longitudinal tongues 7 which are Serial No. 204.846. (N0 model.)
adapted to engage the grooves of said stop shoulders or flanges' The plates2 have their upper sides beveled, as at 8 9, to form seats for the rails, (indicated at (0,) the said seats 8 being overhung on one side by lock-shoulders 10 and open at the outer ends of the plates, as at 11, and the seats 9 being overhung at one side by lock-shoulders 12 and closed at their inner ends or sides by shoulders 13. The shoulders 12 of each plate extend in the same direction, and said plates are reversely arranged, so that the said shoulders of the respective plates extend in opposite directions. Hence the said shoulders 10 12 of the respective lock-plates are adapted to engage the oppositely-extending base-flanges of the rails, so that thelatter are locked against movement in either direction laterally. The plates 2 are movable longitudinally in opposite directions to widen and contract the space between their respective lock-shoulders at will to facilitate the placing of the rails on the seats 8 9 and removal of the rails therefrom when they need to be taken up for repairs or renewal when worn. The lock-plates are further provided at their upper sides with notches 1 1, which aline when the plates are moved in position to lock the rails thereto, and a key or keeper 15, having a tongue 16 to enter the space between the lock-plates and arms 17 to enter the notches 14c and bear against the outer sides of the lock-plates, is provided, the said key or keeper coacting with the lock-plates to prevent inclependent movements of either of the latter in either direction, and hence effectually secure the rails in place.
WVithin the scope of my invention the baseplate and the lock-plates may be made of either cast, malleable, or wrought iron, steel, or other suitable metal, and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular. Neither doI desire to limit myself to the precise construction and combination of devices herein shown and described, as it is evident that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A railway-tie of the class described having oppositelyinclined upWardly-eonverging lock-plates to support the rails, substantially as described.
2. A railway-tie comprising a base-plate and oppositely'inclined up\vardly-converging lock-plates thereon to support the rails and lock them in place, substantially as described.
8. A railway-tie comprising a base-plate having standards rising therefrom and provided with opp0sitely-inelined upwardly-eonverging sides, in combination with lock-plates to bear against the said inclined sides of the standards and having means to engage and lock the rails, and means to secure the lockplates in place.
1. The combination of a base-plate having standards and stops and lock-plates having means to engage and lock the rails in place, said lock-plates being secured on the baseplate by the said standards and stops.
5. The combination of a base-plate having standards and stops and lock-plates having means to engage and lock the rails, said lockplates being secured between the standards and stops, the lock-plates and the stops having coacting interlocking devices to prevent upward movements of said lock-plates, substantially as described. c
6. The combination of a base-plate, lockplates, means to detachably secure the lockplates to the base-plate for longitudinal movement of the latter, said lock-plates having means to engage and lock the rails, and means to lock the said lock-plates together to prevent independent longitudinal movement thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
