To all whom it may concern:
-Beit known that I, WILLIAM J. Bnrsnn, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsv in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to non-refillable bottles of the type disclosed in myv prior Patents Nes. 1,079,387; 1,144,286, 1,144,287v
and 1,241,811. lAs fully disclosed in those prior patents I have invented means for preventing a liquid from entering a bottleand have thus produced a bottle which cannot be refilled and the construction by which this is accomplished includes many novel features as set forth in the above cases one of those features including a ltapered valve in the neck of the bottle and a weight down within the body of the bottle connected tothe valve by a flexible connection.
This invention involves the use of a different form of weight mounted and connected in a different way from what is shown' in my prior patents and this change in construction has certain advantages from the standpoint of ease and cost of production. The new form of weight and its connections, however, are such that they coperate with the other features of my -invention to make an absolutely non-refillable bottle. The novel features of the invention will be ap` parent from the following description taken in connection with the drawing. 'In the drawings,

In the drawings I have shown a bottle having a body portion 1, and an integral neckportion` 2. Suspended within the neck portion 2 is a thimble or cylinder 3 provided atiits upper or outer end with an annular flange 4 which rests upon the ledge 5 in the neck of the bottle Vand this cylinder is of such size in cross section and preferably tapers vdown to the lower end so that it is practically out of contact with the wall of the neck throughout its length. It is provided in its side walls with a plurality of openings or liquid passages 6 and has a central opening 7 in its bottom wall. Within the neck section 8 of the bottle and resting on top of the section 10 there'is acylindrical member 19, a suitable packing`20 being interposed between it andthe member 1G. The reduced outlet portion 28 of the neck is provided with screw threads and a.' screw threaded closure 29 its over it and has on 'its interior a piece of cork 30 to make the closure liquid tight.
The weight used in the present invention is preferably in the form of a glass ball which is secured in any suitable way to the inner end'of the iiexibleconnection 16. As shown in Fig. 2 it may be provided with a hole 31 through which the connection 16 passes and an enlargement on the end of 16 may serve to support the ball and to prevent it from falling off. When the bottle is in normal vertical position, or in any position except in a substantially straight inverted position, the ball by its weight exerts a pull on the connection 16 and holds the valve 12 to its seat. When the bottle is inverted, however, the ball weight falls byvf gravity into the space Vleft betweenv the ta-V pered end of the thimble or cylinder 3, and the opposite walls of the bottle and the length of the connection 16 is such that when the ball is in that position there will be no pull on the connection 16, and the valve 12 may be open to dischargey liquid. I preferably provide the ball 17 with 'projections composed of such material as cork which prevent the glass ball itself from striking the parts of the bottle and thus avoid the shock where two hard pieces of glass strike each other. The cork may be mounted in or secured to the ball in various ways.
vGrooves or depressions 32, which expand toward their inner ends may be provided in the ball and Vpieces of cork 33 may be forced into those depressions with parts projecting therefrom, as lshown in Fig. 2. The taperingv form of the `depression will hold the cork. In Fig. 3, I have shown round balls of cork 34, mounted and secured in semispherical depressions in the ball.
It willbe understood from the above description that in order to pour liquid from the bottle it is necessary to hold the bottle in vertical position. In the opening of a valve like valve 12 shown in the drawing, a very little additional opening movement will effect a materially greater discharge from the bottle and will thus greatly improve the action of the device in pouring the liquid from it.
As explained in one of my earlier applications above mentioned, the sieves 21 and 22 absolutely prevent any one, from working a hair or anything else flexible around the guard and down to the valve. He would be unable to getanything through the small perforations in the sieves, particularly as he can not see between them. The sieves, how* ever, are so arranged as described in my prior application that there maybe a free flow of liquid in emptying the bottle.
While I prefer to make all of the main parts of my device of glass, it will be undercenter 35 having the cylindrical portions 36 and 37 of considerable size above and below the contracted portion. I place on this glass ball a thincork covering made up of two half spheres 38 and 39 which lit the sursuitable way. They are provided with inwardly extending cylindrical projections 40 and 41 iitting the openings 36 and 37. `A suitable flexible connection which maybe a silk thread .42 passes through the parts 40 and 41 and is connected at its other end to the valve 12.
Having thus describedthe invention what is claimed as new and desire'dto be secured by Letters Patent is: Y l g 1. In a non-refillable bottle the combination with the bottle neck of a valveseat therein, a valve adapted to fit said seat and close the liquid passage through said neck, means above said valve to prevent tampering therewith, a perforated thimbley fitting said neck tapering inwardly and provided with a centralhole at its bottom, a weight consisting of a glass ball having pieces of cork secured thereto and projecting therefrom at intervals within said bottle below 5 therein, a valve adapted to fit said seat andV close the liquid passage through said neck, thimble fitting said neck extending inward and provided with a central opening, a ldass ball in said bottle, a flexible connection from said valve to 'said ball passing through the central opening of said thimble, the said glass ball bein-g provided with depressions in its surface at intervals and pieces of cork secured in said depressions and projecting beyond the surface of the ball;
3. In a non-refillable bottle the combination with the bottle neck of alvalve seat therein, a valve adapted to lit said seat and close the liquid passage through said neck, a perforated thimble fitting said neck extending inward and provided with a central opening, a glass ball in said bottle,a flexible connection from said valve to said'ball passing through the central opening of said thimble, the said glass ball being provided with depressions in its surface at intervals, larger at their bottoms than at the surface of the ball and pieces of cork compressed,V and held in said depressions.. l
