NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
l To all whom t `concern Be it known that we, SYDNEY L. VDIGNON the United States of America, residing at 426 `East One Hundred and Fifty-fifth street and 3107 Park avenue, New York, N. Y.,
United States of America, have invented vnewV and useful Improvements in Non-ReillableBottles, of which the following is a the neck of a bottle having the improved ydevice positioned therein.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a bottle having `a neck 2 provided with an inwardly extending 4shoulder 3 adjacent the lower end thereof, .and with a groove or grooves 4 intermediate the shoulder 3 and the upper end of the neck. The ydistance between the shoulder ,3 and thegroove or grooves 4 is substantiallylequal tothe height of the non-refillable device.
The device for reventing .the refilling of; the bottle is positioned in the neck thereof, and comprises a shell 5 formed of any suit-A able material, as for example, hard 'rubberl or the like, which shell is cylindrical in form and ofy a diameter such that it will lit snugly within the neck of the bottle. The lower end ofthe shell is provided with a port or opening 6 and its upper end is provided with an interior thread 7. When in position within the neck of the bottle,*the lower end of the shell rests upon the shoulder 3,.whereby it is prevented from downward movement with respect to the bottle.
The upper end of the shell 5 is closed by a plug 8, preferably formed of the same niaterial of which the shell is formed, and provided with threads adapted to engagethe threads 7 formed in the shell. The plug is provided with a depending portion 9, which extends within the shell, being reduced in size, as clearly shown in the drawing, whereby a passageway is formed between it and the inner walll of the shell 5. The plug is provided with. an opening 10 in its upper portion which communicates, throughlaterally extending openings 11, with theV above mentioned passageway.

is positioned between the plug'S and theV shell 5, and its width is such that its outer edge projects beyond the outer edge ofthe plug so that as the assembled device is forced Vinto the neck of the bottle, after the same has been filled, the edge of the washer will be forced to occupy a position between thezedge of `the upper end of the plug andthe neck of the bottle. v f
rIhe groove or grooves 4 are so positioned that when the device is in position the washer 12 will extend across the groove or grooves 4, kand owing to the resiliency of the material of which the washer ismade, a portion there- `of will be forced into the groove as clearly shown in the ligure, thereby locking the device securely in position and preventing itswithdrawal from the neck of the bottle.
The depending portion 9 of the plug 8 has formed therein an upwardly extending recess 13, within which the upper portion .of a valve member 14 extends. `This valve member is preferably formed .of glass lor the like, and is provided at its lower .end with a portion adapted when in its normal position to close the port 6 in theV shell 5. The valve member 14 is normally heldin its closed position by gravity and by means of a 'spring 15 positioned within the recess 13 and engaging the inner wall of the recess and the upper end of the valve member. The tension of this spring is such that it will slightly overcome the weight lof the valve member 14, so that if the bottle be inverted, when empty, the valve member 14 will be held upon its seat. As the sprino, however, Yjust overbalancesthe weight of the valve .member 14, it follows that if there is any appreciable amount of liquid in t-he bott-le the'weight of the liquid in addition to the weight of the valve member will be sufficient to'overcome the spring and to force as to allow the opening of the valve member 14. Y
The operation of the device which should be largely apparent from the drawing is as follows: Assuming the bottle to be filled with liquid, if it is vdesired to pour the liquid therefrom it is merely. necessary to tilt the bottle in the usual manner and owing to the weight of the liquid the valve mem.
