Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1'7, 1905.
Application filed-October 27, 1904. Serial No. 230,192.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENEDETTO BUCCIERI, a resident of Sharpsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved bottle; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved non-refillable bottle, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the valve-seat detached from the bottle. Fig. 3 is a side sectional elevation of the neck of a bottle, showing a modification of my invention. Fig. 1 is a sectional inverted plan view of the same, taken on line X X of Fig. 8.
To putmy invention into practice, and there by provide a bottle that cannot be refilled after the contents have been removed. I form from glass in the usual manner the body portion 1 of a suitable size and form and having an elongated neck 2 contracted on the inside to form a circular groove 3, in which a valveseat is placed. This valve-seat consists of a cylindrical piece 4:, having an external groove 7, in which a soft-rubber packing-ring 5 is placed, and the said seat formed with a central orifice 6. The valve 8, operating upon this seat, is adapted to cover the orifice 6 when the bottle 1 is in a vertical position and is formed with a downwardly-extending stem and enlarged plate 9 to prevent said valve from becoming disengaged from the seat and at the same time permit the valve to leave its seat when the bottle is tilted or inverted to remove the contents of the same. Above the valve and seat in the mouth of the bottle is an ordinary cork stopper 12, to which is attached a spring-actuated cap 10, the spring 11 of which is connected to a bar 13, passing through the vertical center of said stopper 12, the said bar being held in position by a head 14 and washers 15, said washers being arranged at the top and bottom of the cork.
In operation the bottle is filled. The valve 8 and its connected seat 1 is forced down the neck of the bottle until seated in the groove 3, atwhich time the said seat will expand and engage with the shoulders of said groove, rendering the seat immovable. The stopper 12 is now placed in position, the spring-actuated cap 10 resting upon the top of the valve 8, confining the same to its seat, at which time the bottle is ready to be packed for shipment.
To remove the contents of the bottle, it is first necessary to withdraw the stopper 12 and tilt the bottle in the ordinary manner, the valve 8 leaving its seat and the contents escaping through the orifice 6, the said valve returning to its seat when the bottle is brought back to a vertical or upright position, thereby preventing the refilling of the same.
At Figs. 3 and 4: of the drawings I have shown a modified form of the valve-seat 11, formed in the shape of a hollow cylinder having an opening 10 in its top and open at the bottom and being provided with an interior spring 8, having bent portions 9 extending through the walls of said seat, the said bent portions engaging with the interior groove 2', formed in the neck 2. Said spring has a central support or seat, (indicated by 12 in Fig. 41.)
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bottle comprising a body portion having an elongated neck, said neck being provided with a groove, a valve-seat comprising a ring arranged in said groove and being provided with a packing-ring and a central opening, a valve secured in said opening of the ring, a stopper in said neck, a bar passing centrally through the stopper, a head on said bar, a pair of washers, a spring-secured to the bottom end of the bar, one of said washers being arranged between the said head and stopper and the other between the spring and stopper for securing the bar in the stopper, and a cap on the free end of said spring and bearing against the valve.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENEDETTO BUGCIERI.
