To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. Baiser., akcitizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to non-refillable bottles `of the type disclosed in my prior Patents Nos. 1,079,387; 1,141,286 and 1,144,287 and my copending applications for Patents No. 65,101 filed December 4, 1915 and No. 90,199 filed April 10, 1910. As fullyv disclosed in those prior' patents I have invented means for preventing a liquid from 'entering' a bottle and have thus produced a bottle which cannot be refilled and the construction by which this is accomplished includes many novel features as set forth in the above cases, one of those features including a tapered valve in the neck of the bottle and a weight down within the body of the bottle connected to the valve by a flexible connection. As set forth in my prior patents, it is necessary to have a flexible connection from the weight to some support 'atthe bottom of the bottle and in my application 90,199 above mentioned I have disclosed a simple and convenient means for properly balancing the yweight near the bottom of the bottle by means which can be inserted through the neck of the bottle while the mechanism for preventing refilling` is being,l placed in position and which can be removed from the bottle if the mechanism which prevents refilling is removed from the neck. The object' of the present invention is to provide means for more securely holding,` said removable balancing device in place, preventing; displacement, preventing breakage due to expansion and contraction of the parts and allowingthe valve mechanism to act more freely in discharging' liquid from the bottle. In the drawings I have shown a bottle having a body portion 1 and an integral neck portion Suspended within the neck portiony 2 is a cylinder 3 provided at` its upper or outer end with an annular flange l which rests upon the ledge 5 in the neck of the bottle and this cylinder is of such size in cross section that it is practically out of contact with the wall of the neck throughout its length. `It is provided in its side walls with a plurality of openings or liquid passages and has La central openine; 7 in its bottom wall. Above the integral neck section 2 there is an outer neck section S, which is attached to the section 2 by a collar 9 which engages grooves or depressions in the two sections preferably by a spinning operation.
Vithin the neck of the bottle abovethe end of the cylinder 3 there is `arranged a member 10 having at its inner end an annular flange 11 interposed between ythe two neck sections 2 and 8 and this member 10 is provided with an interior tubulartapered valve seat within which is arranged a suitable valve. The valve shown has a hollow tapered body 12 adapted to fit closely within the valve scat and projecting,r slightly beyond the inner end of the member 10 into the cylinder 3, the outer end of the valve body being' closed by cork 13.' A packing 1/-1 may be inserted between the flange 11 and top of the neck section The inner end of the valve 12 is provided with a projection 15 havingr an eye yto which is secured one end of a suitable llexible means 16 which may be in the form of a chain, the other end of which is connected to an eye at one end of a weight .1.7. The other end of the weight is connected by flexible means 18 with a support in the bottom of the bottle in substantial alinement with the projection 15 on the valve. y
Within the neck section S of the bottle and resting on top of the section 10 there is a cylindrical member 19, a suitable packing 20 being' interposed between it and the member 10. Extending' across the neck of the bottle above the cvlinder 19 two perforated screens or sieves 21, 22, are placed, these sieves beineseparated by a cylindrical memr ber 23 which is opaque so that it is not possible to see between the `two screens through the neck of the bottle. Above the Atwo perforated screens a guard 2-1 `is placed having a disk 25 closing' the `top so as to prevent access to the mechanism in the neck of the with the interior surface of the bottle.

The reduced outlet portion 28 of the neck isprovided with screw threads and a screw threadedclosure 29 fits over it and has on its interior a piece yof cork 30 to make the closure liquid tight.
In order to support the weight 17 from a point at the middle line of the bottle at the bottom, a frame is inserted through the neck ofthe bottle and embodies the vertical section 31, the inturned upper end 32 and the lower end 33 extending across the bottom of thebottle. This frame or shaft is very much like that described in my application 90,199 but in saidapplication the frame or shaft sim-ply rested-in the bottle closeto the side and bottom walls and not only occupied room within the bottle, thus limiting the amount of play which could be allowed Ato the weight 17 without striking it but the construction was such that the shaft and the bottle would not necessarily expand and contract the same amount. According to the present invention, I form a groove 34: in one side of the bottle commencing at the inturned portion at the top and extending to the bottom, this groove being in practice about one inch wide and inch or more in thickness. In case the bottle is made of glass Iv prefer to, form this groove by bending the material of the bottle outwardly, thus forming an exterior rib and an interior groove. The *vertical portion 31 of the shaft is made of such shape and size that it fits accurately in the groove 34 and its inner face is flsh eing in this close contact with the walls ofthe bottle, the shaft will contract and expand in substantial accordance with the contraction and expansion of the bottle itself and thus no undue strains will be produced by changes in temperature to which the bottle or its contents may be subjected.
On the side of the bottle opposite the groove 34, I preferably make a depression in the wall of the bottle which may be made in theform of groove 35 extending from the inturned portion of the bottle at the top to the 4 bottom. kThis groove is opposite the groove or depression 31 and may be made in the same way. The end 36 of the horizontally extending portion 33 of the shaft at the bottom projects into this groove 35 and a piece of cork 37 in the end of the part 36 may make a yielding connection with the bottom of the groove. It will be noted that since the frame fits in the grooves in the sides of the .bottle-it will be firmly and securely-held in position so that it cannot be accidentally displaced. At the upper inturned end 32 of the shaftthere is a corkor other flexible connection 38' to support theshaft yieldingly.
It is to be noted further that at this inturned portion the frame does not make actual contact with the inturned portion of the bottle as does the vertical part 31 and this is to allow for slight differences in expansion and contraction.
It will be understood from the above description that in order to pourA liquid from the bottle it is necessary to hold the bottle in vertical position so that the weight 17 is hanging in a straight line from its support from the horizontal section 33 to the valve 12. This permits the valve 12 to fall from its seat by gravity and the liquid may pass out. Any tipping of the bottle out of a vertical line, however, will make the weight 17 move to one side, thus drawing on the flexible connection 16 and closing the valve. The amount that the valve can open depends on how far out of the .vertical line the weight 17 can move and if the frame 31 is standing out in the bottle, as in my prior application 90,199, the amount of side Inovement of the weight 17 will be limited, since it would be likely to strike the shaft 31. By placing the shaftl 31 in the groove with its inner edge flush with the inner surface lof the bottle, the weight is permittedto move outward just as far as if there were no frame in the bottle. In the opening of a valve like valve 12 shown in the drawing, a very little additional opening movement will e'ect a materially greater discharge from the bottle and will thus greatly improve the action of the device in pouring the liquid from it.
As explained inone of my earlier applications above mentioned, the sieves 21 and 22 absolutely prevent any one from working a hair or anything else flexible around the guard and down to the valve. I-Ie would be unabley to get anything through the small perforations in the sieves, particularly as he cannot see between them. The sieves however are so arranged as described in my prior application that there may be a free iiow of liquid in emptying the bottle.
While I prefer to make all of the main parts of my device of glass, it will be -understood that the use of other materials comes within my invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is: e
1. In a non-reiillable bottle, the combination witha bottle having an interior groove on one side extending from top to'bottom,

2. In a non-refillable bottle, the combination with a bottle having an interior groove on one side extending from top to bottom and an interior depression on the opposite side at the bottom, of means in the neck of the bottle for preventing a liquid from entering the bottle including a tapered valve, a weight within the bottle flexibly connected to said valve, a frame of rigid material within said bottle adapted to be with `drawn through the neck, the said frame having a portion closely fitting in said -groove from a point adjacent the neck to the bottom and a bottom portion extending across the bottom of the bottle into said depression, names for yieldingly but firmly supporting said frame from a fixed portion of the bottle at the end of said cross piece and at said neck, and flexible means connecting said weight to the frame'at the bottom of the bottle and on substantially the center line thereof.

In a n-on-reillable bottle, the combination with a bottle, the side walls of which are outwardly bent on opposite sides from the inwardly turned portion at the neck to the bottom to form exterior ribs and interior grooves, of means in the neck ofthe bottle for preventing a liquid from entering the bottle including a tapered valve, a weight within the bottle flexibly connected to said valve, a frame of rigid material within said bottle adapted to be Withdrawn through the neck, the said frame having a vertical portion closely fitting in said groove on one side .from top to bottom and having its interior face substantially flush with the interior surface ol' the bottle and a portion extending across said bottle at the bottom and terminating in the groove on the opposite side and eompressible means for supporting said bottom portion firmly from the bottom of said groove and yielding means above the top of said groove in which said vertical portion fits for holding said frame in position, and flexible means connecting said weight to the frame at the bottom of the bottle and on substantially the center line thereof.
