Be it known that l, Ci-nxnnns lV. CorriN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Portland, county of Cumberland, State of Maine, have invented an improvement in Sewing-Tables, of which the following description, iiiv Y connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like partsy in each of the several views.

This invention relates to tables and while having other andL more general fieldsA of usefulness, is well adapted to be embodied in a light readily portable table, preferably with folding legs, designed for use as a sewing table and the like. A prime object of the invention is to provide a table top presenting different portions of its surface with diverse characteristics kas to smoothness,

hardness, and the like, whereby it is best adapted for uses as a ysewing table and in cloth Vcutting or the like. YA further object is to provide an improved construction and relative arrangement of the' different por tions 'of the tabletop whereby they are interfitted and interengaiged to constitute a strong and substantial unitary top. The foregoing and other objects and features of. the invention will be better understood ,fromvr the following detailed description taken -in connection with the accompanying drawings and will be thereafter pointed out in the appended claims, n

The table is Vherein shown as having a rectangular oblong ltop '10, .though f or purposes of the present'invention this 1s to be considered merely as illustrative. Adjacent the four corners ofthis top, legs 11 are pivoted as seen at 12 to swing lengthwise of the top for folding in against the underside thereof, the two legs which fold toward each other on the saine side from opposite ends of the table being mounted in offset relation so as to lie side by side when folded as indicated in Fig. 2. Each of these legs is held in operative position when extended specification of Letters Patent.

ln accordance with my invention themain body portion of the top is formed of light relatively thin material supported and held by a framework composed of a peripheral rail 16 which may be composed of side and end sections dove-tailed at the corners as indicated at 17. The top framework also is provided with an inner rail `18 extending from end to end of the top a short vdistance from one side thereof kwhich may be considered the front ofthe top, and a similar length# wise extending` rail 19 extending the length of the top adjacent the back thereof, these rails being secured to the peripheral rail' and thus contributing to the strength and rigid-ity thereof7 and of the'top. The rails ljor and rearportion of the table top from end to end is covered withsoft cloth presentmg a nap surface, or soft felt or the-like,

as indicated at 2O.r This cloth or felt laid upon a backing which may conveniently be of vpulp or other like composition made into a stiff board 21, though of course the use of such. materialis merely illustrative and intended to typify any suitable backing. This board and the cloth laid thereon are held' at the back and sides byy the peripheral Vframe 16, Vresting on a shoulder 22 formed by an undercut recess at the inner top corner of the peripheral rail, and are of course also supported by the rear inner' rail 19. Further such a surface ishighlyV desirable for the reason that patterns and cloth material being operated on, do not tend to slide thereon so as to be apt to be accidentally displaced, but will adhere andieinain in the position ivhere placed, so that such operations as cutting out 4from aatterns is made easier and more convenient. Also perforating or pinlring Wheels ivorlr much better against a relatively soft backing .such as here` iresented. Also th'e'vvorlr can be pinned to thecloth or felt surface when required. Still further this soft nap surface makes it niuch easier to pick up pins,'needles and the like than would be the case with a hard smooth surface. 0n they other hand it is of course requisite and desirable .that the front portion of the adjacent .the measure 26, and between it and the front edge, should be smooth, hard and Vpolished so that the material can be readily slid therealong for measuring and cutting purposes. Having described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ljatent is: Y l i 1. A table having a top composed of relatively thin material with a surrounding peripheral rail to support 'the same, and an inner supporting rail extending` from end to end of the table intermediate the sides thereof, said top having a rear port-ion coniposed of a'backin'g covered with soft cloth or the like, landl a front portion composedV of a board presenting `a relatively hard smooth surface, said rear'and frontportions` abutting and both restin'gfon. said Vinner rail,- the line of division between said front and rear portions extending in parallelism With the front longitudinalY edge thereof.

2. A tablehaving a top composed of relatively thin material ivith a surrounding' peripheral rail to supportthe same, said rail having an 'under-cut rabbet at its inner top edge receiving the thin material ofthe body ofthe top, andan inner rail extending across the top, said top having rear'and front portions presenting surfaces Wit diverse characteristics, the rearportion being sound deadening and the front portion smooth and hard, said portions abutting and both fixed onsaid inner rail.

3. A table having a vtop with a rear portion composed of la backing covered with soft cloth orthe like, and a 'ront portion composed of a board presenting fit-'relatively hard smooth surface, and an inner rail to y Y Vwhich said front and Vbach portionsarev secure-d, the cloth of said rear portion being extended under and clamped by the adiacent edge of the board constituting said front l portion.
