To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Orr-o E. On'rrrrne, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of .l. ei'msylvania, have invented'a new and useful Improvement in Hats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to hats and has special reference to removable sweat bands for hats.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and eihcient removable sweat band for hats which will be sanitary and can be easily and readily attached to and detached from the hat for washing or any other purpose, as well as one in which the attachments will not injure or mar the looks or shape of the hat, and in which the attaching parts will not be exposed to View, so as to be unsightly, and one in which the band orhat will not be liable to become soiled by the perspiration.

To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved hat, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows a vertical cross section through a hat having my improved sweat band applied thereto;

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the band removed; and

Fig. 3 is an exaggerated sectional view showing the band in position to be attached to the hat.

Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawin As illustrated in the drawing, 1 designates a hat of any desired shape or construction, which is provided with the usual brim 2 at the bottom or lower end of the body 4: of the hat, and at such end is the usual band 5 surrounding the exterior of such body, within the hat 1, and extending around the interior surface of the body 4- and. adjacent the lower end 3 is the strip or band 6, which is formed of any suitable material such as cloth or canvas, and is attached at its lower end to such'body by the usual stitching or sewing. The band 6 has its upper and lower mturned toward the hat body a and are secured to the body 7 of such band in order to stiffen the same.

The strip or band 6 being thus free at its upper end and attached to the hat body l at its lower end acts as a support for the removable sweat band 8 which is adapted to be connected thereto, as hereinafter described, and is formed of any suitable washable material, such as cloth or canvas. The removable band 8 is of the usual form or shape for fitting within and extending around the hat body 4- and the upper and lower edges 9 are inturned against the inner faces of the body 10 of the same, so that such edges can be connected to such body by sewing or stitching through the same to stiffen such band. Connected to the lower edge 9 of the removable band 8 by sewing or stitching and on the inner face of the body 10 thereof is the fastening strip 11, which is also formed of any suitable washable material, such as cloth or canvas, and such strip being thus free at its upper end is adapted to be connected to the band 6, as hereinafter described. The strip 11 is formed of a thin fiat piece in cross section by having two plies of the material, and their upper and lower edges are stitched or sewed together. Between the band 6 and the strip 11 are a series of spring clasps 12, which comprises the matrix member 13 for being stitched or sewed onto and through the strip 6 and the projecting mem ber 14: forbeing stitched or sewed onto or through the strip 11. These members 13 and .14 forming theclasps 12 are the same in number and extend around the strip 6 and strip 11, so as to engage wlth each other and hold the sweat band 8 in place when inserted in the hat.

In order to put the sweat band 8 in place within the hat 1, it is first inserted within such hat and given its proper shape so that itwill conform to the shape of the body Al of the hat. The members .13 and 14 of the clasps 12 on the band 6 and strip 11 respectively, are then brought into register, and upon pressure being exerted upon the outer face of the band 8 and against each of the members 14c such members will be sprung into the members 13, which will thereby securely fasten the band 8 to the strip 6 and thus hold said band 8 in place.

What-I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination With a hat having a strip permanently secured to and within the hat, of a washable sweat band removably 'fitting within the hat, a strip permanently secured to and surrounding said sweat band, and fastening means between said strips for holding said sweat band in place.

2. In combination with a hat having a strip permanently secured to and within the hat, of a washable sweat band for fitting within the hat, a strip pern'ianently secured to and surrounding said sweat band, and spring clasps con'iprising members sorurod to each of said strips for engaging with each other to hold said sweat band in place.
