Be it known that I, CARRINGTON PHiiLrs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Advertising Device, of which the following is a specication.

My invention is an improvement in advertising devices of that particular character which provide for readily and convenientlyV changing the advertisments so that different advertising matter may be inserted from time to time in the space engaged by the advertiser or the card of a new advertiser substituted. r

.Y The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple, neat and attractive ad-v vertising device especially adapted as an accessory to the writing desk or table of 'a hotel room, and which will not only form an effective medium for advertising local shops,&c., but also serve to hold and protect paper and envelops for the use of the guests of the hotel; the construction of the device permitting it to be made ornamental in appearance so that it will not be at all objectionable, as many of these devices are.

With the foregoing Object in view my invention contemplates the provision of a paper and envelop holder in therforin of a book ,or folder the two connected backs or sections of which are' provided on the outer side, respectively, with means for retaining exposed advertising cards and on the inner side with exible pockets to receive paper and envelops, special means being ein,- ployed in the present instance for connect,- ing the backs or sections of the folder and for securely holding the cards in place interchangeably; all as hereinafter fully described and more specifically set forth in the appended claims.

In carrying out my invention I purpose making the advertising device in the form of two covers or sections preferably hinged together at one end and temporarily connected at the other end, each section comprising a thick substantial backing of cardboard or other suitable material having shallow pockets or depressions in the outer side to receive advertising cards and a metal skeleton frame to hold the cards in the pockets or depressions leaving the printed matter thereon exposed to view; the back and skelef ton frame being detachably connected by peculiar means which also coperate in xing the hinges to said covers or sections.

Inasmucli as each cover or section of the book or folder is similar in construction a description of one will apply also to the other, like numerals and letters of reference being used to indicate like parts.

Referring to the drawings, l0 designates the backing of a cover or section of the device, and said. backing is provided on one side, its outer side, with ribs or webs at right angles. to each other to form a suitable number `of depressions or shallow pockets lQb, and 1l designates a skeleton frame, preferably of metal, formed to correspond in size with the backing so that the cross-pieces l1a thereof overlie the ribs or webs 10a. The cross-pieces1la of the skeleton frame -are a little wider than the ribs or webs 1,0a so as to overlap the edges of the cards and securely hold them in place; and the skeleton franiehas a surrounding depending marginal flange 111?v embracing the edges of the backing, so that, the latter fits within said skeleton frame. For the purpose of holding or clamping the backing and skeleton frame together I provide at one end two means of attachment and at thefother endv a single attaching means, each attaching means com 'prising a plate 13 with a half-*round threaded lug 13a attached to the backing and a corresponding half-round threaded lug 11c formed integr-allyy with or welded on to the flange 11b fof the 4:,lnetal skeleton frame, so that when the fiat sides of the two lugs are brought together said lugs will conjointly form a threaded pin or bolt to receive a nut, 14, by which means the backing and frame are clamped together. The two sets of lugs or bolt members at one end of a cover or section are made of such length as to receive a leaf of the hinge, as 15, below the nut, the other leaf of the hinge being likewise connected to the companion threaded pin or bolt of the other cover or section (see Fig. 4), and in order that these hinges may be kept in proper alinement and thereby provide a more substantial hinge connection for the covers or sections of the book or folder both leaves of each hinge are formed with end retaining iianges 15a engaging the edges of the skeleton frame, respectively.

It will be understood by reference to Figs. 2, 6 and 7 that the threaded pin or bolt structure at the open end 'of the book or folder is shorter than those just above mentioned for the reason that no hinge is required at this point, the covers or sections being temporarily held together by leather tabs 16 having any ordinary7 or conventional form of fastener, as for instance one of the ball and socket type, as suggested at 16 in Fig. 2, and for convenience in suspending the advertising device from a nail or other support the aforementioned tabs are provided with holes of suitable size.

The device comprising the hinged covers or sections in the form of a book or folder and constructed to provide an advertising medium, as described, may be utilized for al variety of purposes; 'for instance provided on the inner sides of the covers or sections with flexible or extension pockets 17 and 18 to hold paper, envelops, &c.; adapted as a temporary binder for pamphlets, magazines, &c.

In the modification shown in Figi 3 the center front portion of the cover is provided with a very large pocket or depression of large area to receive a blotter, 20, and by this arrangement the device is adapted for the uses of an ordinary deskspad, with the advertisements or business cards arranged around the blotter. In this instance the cross-pieces or parts of the skeleton frame surrounding the depression for the blotter would have their edges flush with the edges of said depression and the frame would be provided with triangular pieces 11d in the corners of the opening for said blotter so that the latter may be inserted and removed more easily-after the manner of an ordi nary desk-pad. By this arrangement it would not be necessary to separate the backing and skeleton frame every time a fresh blotter is to be inserted; but it will be readily understood such an arrangement would not be desirable in the case of the advertising cards inasmuch as it would tend to encourage the substitution of a business card by an unscrupulous person for one of the regular cards of a bona fide advertiser. For the further protection of the advertising cards, to prevent tampering with them and to keep them from becoming soiled, a plate of glass or Celluloid may be placed on top o'f each card and held in place by the skeleton frame, as will be readily understood.

In the use of the device the cards of the advertisers are placed in the pockets or depressions 10b and the skeleton frames attached to the backings to complete the covers, and then the covers hinged together by applying the hinges and nuts in the manner hereinbefore particularly described. The device is then ready to receive the paper and envelops or other articles. Whenever it is desired to change the form of any one of the advertisements7 or substitute a card of an other advertiser, it is only necessary to remove the nuts 14, thus releasing the cover from the hinges-which latter are then carried by the other coverand remove the skeleton frame from the backing. After inserting the new card or cards the parts are again assembled and clamped together. Of course in case it should be desired to more securely lock the backing and skeleton frame of each cover together, so that substitutions of advertisements could not be made by unauthorized parties, the two-part threaded pins or bolts could be upset on the nuts; but such a precaution is not likely to 100 become necessary.

As heretofore stated, the advertising device is particularly adapted as an accessory to the equipment of a writing table or desk in a hotel room, reading room, waiting 105 room, or other place, and being very useful either when adapted to hold paper and envelops or as a deck-pad, it will be more likely to attract attention to the advertisements than if it was designed solely for ad-` 110 vertising purposes. Furthermore, in the form of a. holder for paper, envelops, &c., it is easily handled and. therefore the advertisements on the outside of both covers are likely to receive attention or be exposed as 115 much one as the other.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. A hinge fastening for the parts of an advertising device comprisingV half-round lugs projecting from the meeting edges of 120 the parts respectively andthreaded on their curved sides, the lug on each part registering with a corresponding lug on the companion part to conjointly receive a nut for connecting7V said parts together, and a hinge 125 having holes in its leaves to receive opposite joined lugs on the connected parts of the device so as to be attached thereto by the nuts, substantially as herein shown and described.
