WITNESS.- /A, I M I 23 Q R v BY THE COLUMBIA PLANOGRMII cm, WASHINGTON. n. c.
To all whom it may concern: v
7 Be it known that I, ROBERT C. ALE ANDER, a citizenof the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the county of Caddo; and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Ironing- Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and us the'same. I
This invention relates to an ironing table and particularly to a closely folding construction thereof.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of table comprising crossed front. and rear legs pivoted together and foldably connected to the board, and a stay for connecting the legs and adapted to closely nest with the other parts when they are in folded position.
Withthe foregoing and other objects in view which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that change can be made within thescope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the ao companying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the table in erect position;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same folded;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the folded table; and
Fig. 4 is a cross section of line 44 of Fig. 3.
The ironing board 10 may be of any desired construction or configuration and is provided upon its under face with a pair 7 of longitudinally extending cleats or ribs 11 each having therein an elongated slot 12.
The underside of the board is also provided 7 at the rear with depending lugs 13 to the inner sides of which the upper ends ofthe parallel front legs 14 are secured by means of the pivots 15. These legs are also pivotally connected to the rear leg 16 by means of the pivot bolts 17. The rear legs 16 are parallel and disposed at the opposite sides of the ribs 11 between the legs'14 while the upper ends thereof are connected together by a bolt er tie member 18 slidably mounted Specification of Letters Patent.

the elongatedslots 12 ofthe'ribsl The front legs 14 are atthe outer'sides of the rear legs, said rearlegs being adapted to the legs 14 outside of the rear leg's. 1
For the purpose of added stability these rear legs are provided with triissjbraces 19 f'ex'tending downwardly. at I angle therefrom at the outer sides of the legs 14 and secured at their upper ends the pivot bolts 17. The braces 19 are connected near 'their'base by a cross bar 20 which is secured to the lower end of the rear legs 16.
For the purpose of adjusting and retaining the board at different elevations a stay 21 is provided which may be of any desired material, preferably of metal rod, and is pivoted at its ends, as at 22, in the brace or truss members 19 of the legs 16. This stay 21 is of U-shape and its yoke 23' is provided with engaging loops 24 to seat over the front legs 14. For this purpose these legs are provided with a series of notches or recesses 25 in their upper edges which permit the vertical adjustment of the table by engagingthe connecting stay in the various notches. The front legs are also provided with a recess 26 adapted to receive the loops 25 of the stay 21 When the parts are in folded position and when in this position the dropped or oflset portion of the yoke 23 fits astride and around ribs 11 below the under side of the board. The longitudinal side members of the stay 21 extend across the outer sides of the legs 14, so that the loops 24 can engage over said legs, with the olfset portion of the yoke depending between said legs to provide an effective relation of said legs and stay.
The folding and unfolding movement of the several parts will be apparent from the foregoing description, and it will be seen that when extended the legs are firmly braced by the truss members 19 against side movement and heldl in their extended and adjusted position by the stay 21, while when folded the parts are adapted to closely seat against the board at the opposite side of the ribs thus effecting a compact fiat structure very convenient for storage or transportation. The brace members produce a' tripod effect thus securing rigidity of thetable, and
when erected for use a large portion of the v V of the board. It will also be observed that when the table is erected the parts automatically assume their proper position and the stay 21 falls by gravity into the proper notch or recess vation of the board.
This invention presents a very simple ef- An ironing board having upon its under I,
face a longitudinally eXtending slotted rib, front legs pivotally connected to the under 'Gopies of this patent may be obtained for to establish the desiredele-' side of said boardtto fold next to the rib,
rear legs crossing and pivotally connected to the outer sides of'said front legs and having their upper ends slidably connected through said slot, truss members extending downwardly from said pivotal connections at the outer sides of the front legs, a cross bar connecting the truss members and the lower ends of th rear legs, and a stay extending from the truss members and adjustably connected to the front legs.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT C. ALEXANDER.
