Description

"c. D. FLYNT.
Improvement in.Spring Bed-Bottoms.
No. 131,675. Patented Sep. 24, m2.
Inn eTUibv;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHESTER D; FLYNT, OF NEw YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS men TO HENRY A. MOORE, 0F SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER D. FLYNT, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring-Beds; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the 7 art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Eigure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention; Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the same when folded up.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to a spring-bed which is constructed of flat strips of metal, steel being used by preference, said strips being interwoven with each other, while their ends are bent down over the edges of aframe which supports the bed and which is provided with traverses forming the supports for conical coiled springs which bear against the interwoven metal strips in such a manner that by the combined elasticity of the interwoven metal strips and of the coiled springs a durable and comfortable bed is produced, and, at
' the same time, a firm connection between the bed bottom and the frame is effected.
The frame, and also the longitudinal metal strips, are. made in sections, and the latter are provided at their inner ends with loops which catch over a rod secured to one of the sections of the frame in such a manner that, by said sectional metal strips and rod, a hinge-joint is formed for the purpose of folding up the bed.
' The head piece of the bed is detached from themain frame and connected to the ends of the longitudinal metal strips which act as springs and allow of adjusting said head piece at any desired inclination.
In the'drawing, the letter A designates the frame of my bed, to which is secured the bottom the frame A,'so that they can be secured to the same by nails or other means. Said frame is provided with traverses b, which form the supports for the coiled springs O, the tops of which bear againstthe bottom B, and increase the elasticity and power of resistance of the same. Both the frame A and the bottom B are made in sections, and the longitudinal metal strips of each section of the bottom are provided at theirinner ends with loops 0, which catch over a rod, 01, secured to one of the sections of the frame A. By these means a simple and durable hinge-joint is produced which allows of folding up the bed to the position shown in Fig. 3. The head piece D isdetached' from the main frame A, and it is secured to the longitudinal metal strips, which act as springs, and allow of adjusting said head piece at any desired inclination. By covering this bed with some water-proof material it can be converted into an effective life-preserver.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The sections of a bed bottom made of a series of strips of sheet metal, interwoven essentially as described, and hinged together by the rod 01' and loops 0 0, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination with a bed bottom made of a series of strips of sheet metal interwoven, as described, and united together by a rod, d, and loops 0 c, the supplementary springs O 0, arranged upon traverses b b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with side frames A A, I claim the head piece D, secured to the ends of the longitudinal metal strips a a, which act as springs and allow of adjustment of the said head piece with or without the supplementary springs, substantially as set forth.
, This specification signed by me this 17th day of May, 1872.
O. 1). FLYNT.
